G.N. Troepolsky

November 29, 2015 - 110 years of Gavriil Troepolsky, author of the world-famous novel "White Bim Black Ear".

The famous Russian writer Gavriil Nikolaevich Troepolsky lived a long life, remaining a caring, courageous and honest man, a man of active kindness. G. Troepolsky introduced the reader to real people of different characters, customs, quirks. Gavriil Nikolaevich often used stories from his own life in his works, successfully combining real events and fiction. “I am for writing about everything ... If you write only about good, then for evil it is a find, a brilliance; if you write only about happiness, then people will stop seeing the unfortunate, they will not notice, ”said the writer.

G. N. Troepolsky wrote several books: "Chernozem", "PhD", "Prokhor X VII and others", "Stories".

But his main book is the piercing story "White Bim Black Ear". A tragic book about a dog and its life among people, full of adventures, joys and sorrows. The author, with great faith in the victory of good over evil and untruth, raises complex moral problems. This is a book that once you start reading it, you can't put it down."White Bim Black Ear" is“a word to little people who will later be adults, a word to adults who have not forgotten that they were once children”- wrote Gavriil Nikolaevich Troepolsky.

The story "White Bim Black Ear" brought the writer in 1975 the State Prize of the USSR. G. N. Troepolsky was awarded the Italian prize in the field of children's and youth literature - "Bancarellino". The book has been published in many countries and translated into many languages. In American colleges, "White Beam Black Ear" is included in the compulsory literature curriculum.

Director Stanislav Rostotsky shot a wonderful two-part film starring Vyacheslav Tikhonov. A touching lyrical film story about the fate of a dog losing its beloved owner, about people's attitude to "smaller brothers", made many people cry over the fate of Bim.

In 1998, a monument to the dog White Bim Black Ear was opened in Voronezh. One of the streets of Voronezh is named after the writer. One of the city's libraries also bears his name.

More details about the fate of the writer can be found in the book of the Voronezh writer M. Fedorov "The Man of Chernozem". This is a documentary novel based on the memoirs of the writer's relatives, friends and acquaintances, archival materials and publications. The book also tells about the fate a priest from the outback - Father Nikolai Troepolsky, shot in 1931 for resisting collectivization. The story about the case of Nikolai Troepolsky “The writer's father. Case No…” The writer M. I. Fedorov was personally acquainted with G. Troepolsky and considers him one of those people who guided him through life and helped him not to retreat from his goal - to become a writer.

Statements of G. N. Troepolsky

“You need to live in such a way that you are not afraid to sell your parrot to the biggest gossip in the city”

“You can say stupid things, but not in a solemn tone”

“Thus, warm friendship and devotion became happiness, because each understood each and each did not demand from the other more than he could give. This is the basis, the salt of friendship."

“No dog in the world considers ordinary devotion to be something unusual. But people came up with the idea of extolling this feeling of a dog as a feat only because not all of them, and not so often, have loyalty to a friend and loyalty to duty so much that this is the root of life, the natural foundation of the being itself, when the nobility of the soul is a self-evident state.

Before starting the research work, we conducted a survey among the students of our school, whether they are familiar with the work of the fellow countryman G. N. Troepolsky, and its results are reflected in the following diagram (Appendix 1).

Biography of Troepolsky G.N.

Gavriil Nikolaevich Troepolsky November 29, 1905 in the village of Novo-Spasskoe on Elani (now Novospasovka (Gribanovsky district, Voronezh region) in the family of a priest.

He graduated from an agricultural school in 1924, worked as a rural teacher, and in 1931-1954 as a collective farm agronomist. For the rest of his life, respect for peasant labor remained in him.

Due to the circumstances of the time, G. Troepolsky had to study at four secondary educational institutions: he started at the Novokhopersk gymnasium (grade 3), continued at the Novogolsk school of the 2nd stage, and after its closure he graduated from the last grade in Novokhopersk. Already with a secondary education, he entered the secondary agricultural school (village of Alyoshki, Borisoglebsk district).

Studying the biography of the writer, we learned that after graduating from school, the future writer studied at an agricultural school in Borisoglebsk. Then he worked as a teacher in rural schools. Then he switched to agronomic work. He set experiments on agricultural technology, was engaged in selection.

Troepolsky taught not far from his native places - in the villages of Pitim and Makhrovka. In the spring of 1931, he got the opportunity to work in agronomy, first as a junior researcher, and then as head of the Aleshkovsky stronghold of the Voronezh Regional Experimental Station.

Since 1936, G. Troepolsky in Ostrogozhsk has been in charge of the stronghold of the same station, and from 1937 to January 1954 he is the head of the Ostrogozhsk state variety testing site for grain crops; here he also led the selection of millet, one of the varieties bred by him was zoned in the Central Chernozem zone (“Ostrogozhskoe-9”). G. Troepolsky generalized the materials of observations and selection in the Ostrogozhsky variety plot in several scientific works.

Almost a quarter of a century was devoted to agronomy, a quarter of a century lived in the small town of Ostrogozhsk. Only in 1959, already being a professional writer, G. Troepolsky moved to Voronezh, where he lived in a house on the street. Tchaikovsky his fruitful years.

Lately, literature attracted G. Troepolsky from his youth. Even at school, he tried to put into words the beauty of his native land that had opened up to him, pictures of village life, and decades later, the lines of a sixteen-year-old youth, written in 1921, entered the novel "Chernozem".

A good memory of the young teacher of the Novogolsk school, Grigory Romanovich Shirma, remained in Troepolsky for the rest of his life. He captivated his students with his love for the great Russian literature, devotion to its precepts. Troepolsky himself explained that he became a writer under his influence: “... I would hardly have become a writer if I had not met Grigory Romanovich in my life. He taught us to think about what we read.”

The teacher and student, People's Artist of the USSR, artistic director of the State Academic Choir of the Byelorussian SSR G. R. Shirma and the writer Troepolsky, were destined to meet many years later.

At the time of teaching Troepolsky continued to write. Once he showed his experiments to the writer N. Nikandrov who happened in Makhrovka. A well-known writer at that time advised not to rush, not to send the manuscript, "but you must write it." Apparently, Nikandrov saw in the young Troepolsky a man capable of serious exacting self-esteem, of honest handling of the word. And I wasn't wrong.

Creative heritage of G. N. Troepolsky

In 1938, the story “Grandfather” appeared in the anthology “Literary Voronezh” under the pseudonym T. Lirvag (on the contrary, it is read as T. Gavril). This was the first publication of Troepolsky the writer, but Troepolsky will never republish this story. This beginning, executed in the spirit of popular ideas about life and literature, will not be continued. The story, suffering from literary borrowing, also gravitated toward edification. “The more I reread the story then,” G.N. Troepolsky later recalled, “the less I liked it, and I decided that I could not be a writer.”

Only 15 years later, the author of the not entirely successful story “Grandfather” changed his mind: Troepolsky, captured at the turn of the 1940s and 50s by several ideas at once, launched work on the cycle of stories “From the notes of an agronomist”. In November 1952, Troepolsky sent one of them (Nikishka Boltushok) to the editors of the Novy Mir magazine. This magazine became the pioneer of Troepolsky the artist. “Troepolsky was a very serious agronomist, he was well aware of the experimental work for which pre-revolutionary Russia was so glorious and even famous, but the practice of collective-farm and state-farm construction led him to bewilderment, which he tried with his inherent humor, with irony to express in fiction. Tvardovsky understood him very well - after all, he is also a peasant son, one might say, an agriculturalist. Almost all of Troepolsky's works of the 1950s and 1960s (novels, short stories, essays, articles) saw the light for the first time on the pages of Novy Mir. Throughout his life, Troepolsky was grateful to A.T. Tvardovsky for his active participation in his creative life. Interested in the stories, the editor-in-chief of the magazine A.T. Tvardovsky felt a real talent in the beginning writer. He often visited Tvardovsky, discussed his new ideas with him and received additional creative energy from him. After the death of the poet, Troepolsky often visited his family.

Troepolsky became a "novice" writer, in fact, at the age of 47. Troepolsky brought his own theme to literature: "... pain for the land, for the fate of its sowers and keepers, for the expanse of the steppe and the high sky, for the blue veins of the rivers and the rustling reeds ..."

The cycle “From the notes of an agronomist” (“Notes of an agronomist”) consists of 7 stories: “Nikishka Chatterbox”, “Grishka Hvat”, “Ignat with a balalaika” (New World. 1953. No. 3), “Prokhor the seventeenth, the king of tinsmiths”, "Trailer Terenty Petrovich", "Tugodum" (New World. 1953. No. 8; newspaper publication of the story "Tugodum": Young Communard. Voronezh. 1953. July 12) and "One Day" (New World. 1954. No. 1). Subsequently, all these stories ("Notes of an Agronomist") were published as a separate book, already entitled "Prokhor the Seventeenth and Others" (1954). Troepolsky depicts collective farm life without any embellishment - with its real complexities and contradictions. All the characters in the cycle, both positive and negative, are written out by Troepolsky brightly, convexly and psychologically convincing.

In the mid-1950s, Troepolsky, on the basis of "Agronomist's Notes", created the screenplay "Land and People" (Literary Voronezh. 1955. Book 36; the film was shot by director S.I. Rostotsky at the M. Gorky Film Studio in 1955).

In 1954 Troepolsky became a member of the SP of the USSR, moved to Voronezh, where he lived until the end of his days. The 50-year-old prose writer, the author of only a few medium-sized works, gained all-Union fame.

The short stories “Agronomists”, “Neighbors”, “At Steep Yar” (all from 1954) and “Mitrich” (1955) that followed the cycle “From the Notes of an Agronomist”, similar in material and issues, revealed new facets of Troepolsky’s outstanding talent and testified to the growth of artistic writer's skill. And such characters of working people as Mitrich from the story of the same name and Senya Troshin ("At the Steep Yar") became Troepolsky's true discovery. The ambiguity, the psychological layering of these images gave rise to disputes among critics.

From the second half of the 1950s, Troepolsky worked on the novel "Chernozem" (book 1st - 1958; book 2nd - 1961), in which the life of the central black earth village from 1921 to 1930 is recreated in relief. Troepolsky managed to bring a lot of new in the era of collectivization. In the center of the story is the Zemlyakov family. Without turning a blind eye to mistakes, "excesses" in the process of collectivization, Troepolsky painted a general dramatic picture of peasant life.

G.N. Troepolsky knew how to realistically show life in his works, admiring the man-creator, the man-worker, fighting cruelty and selfishness.

Troepolsky's story "In the Reeds" (1963), which has the subtitle "From the Hunter's Notebooks", is solved in a different vein: the lyrical element dominates in it and the beauty of native nature is glorified.

In the mid-1960s, Troepolsky’s publicistic word sounded throughout the country: “On rivers, soils and other things” (Novy Mir. 1965. No. 1), “How much water does a person need?” (Pravda. 1966. Sept. 4) and "On drainage and "drainage"" (Ibid. 1966. Sept. 5). These "environmental" articles of the prose writer caused a great public outcry and significantly complicated the life of Troepolsky himself, who dared to declare war on officials and the destroyers of nature. Essays and travel notes of Troepolsky in the late 1950s - early 1960s, in which various problems of agriculture were discussed and which were a kind of "companion" of his cycle of stories "From the Notes of an Agronomist". "Thoughts about the Earth" (1956), "In the Deep Region" (1958), "The Conscience of the Farmer" (1959), "The Road Goes Uphill" (1961), "Life Demands It" (1963), also attracted attention readers. Troepolsky's documentary essay "Legendary True Story" (1957), which dealt with the events of the Civil War, was widely known: in it the writer sang glory to the brave - the dead and the living. Repeatedly in the 1960s, Troepolsky acted as a feuilletonist: “Pink Conscience”, “Thorny Road, or a Brief Review of the Ways of Talent Origination” (1963), “Linden on a Quiet Pine” (1964), etc. Troepolsky had a lot to do with Voronezh , and he could not help but write about his native city.

Gavriil Nikolaevich created many interesting books. But his best, most important book will, of course, remain the story about a dog that has become known to the whole world - "White Bim Black Ear", published in 1971.

This work can be called a tragic novel about a dog's life, full of discoveries and adventures, joys and troubles.

The story "White Bim Black Ear" brought the author in 1975 the title of laureate of the State Prize of the USSR. The writer was awarded the Italian prize in the field of children's and youth literature - "Bancarellino". Book G.N. Troepolsky was published in Mongolia and Poland, in Bulgaria and China. It is read in Bengali, English, French, Japanese, Hungarian and many other languages. In American colleges, the story of G. N. Troepolsky about the faithful Beam is included in the compulsory literature curriculum.

A piercing and touching story about a dog named Bim - a devoted and faithful friend of his owner - made more than one generation of children and adults cry, who read the story of the wonderful Russian writer G. Troepolsky "White Bim Black Ear". A successful film adaptation made this work of the author even more popular.

This book is not only about a dog, but also about people - good and bad, about the attitude towards animals, which, like an x-ray, shines through souls, revealing baseness and petty meanness in some, and nobility, the ability to compassion and love in others.

A wonderful film was shot by director S. Rostotsky based on the novel by G. N. Troepolsky, which premiered in 1975 - “the most humane film about human cruelty,” as critics called it. The film received the Crystal Globe Award and was nominated for an Oscar. When asked what made him turn to the screen embodiment of the heroes of the plot of the story, the director answered: “Of course, the desire to convey all the charm, all the charm of this book. But the main thing is to talk with people again with the help of the screen about the most important universal problems to which the work is devoted.

In the Voronezh puppet theater "Jester" in 2000. the premiere of the staged memoir "White Bim" took place. Tomsk director R. Vinderman spoke about his work: “We staged our performance with pain and anxiety for the human soul - for an adult, for a child. Our dog is, in essence, the same person, who is simply called Bim ... "
So the White Bim Black Ear is running around the world - through the pages of books, across screens and scenes from different countries, has been running towards people for thirty years. And, brushing away tears from our eyes, we touched the story told by G.N. Troepolsky of history, we become at least a little kinder, nobler, more humane.

After the death of the writer in Voronezh, where he lived for many years, a monument to Bim was erected near the puppet theater (the authors of the monument are Elsa Pak and Ivan Dikunov, laureates of the State Prize of Russia) (Appendix No. 2).

The writer lived a long life, remaining a man of active kindness, not indifferent, courageous and honest. Voronezh residents have always been proud of their countryman, so G. N. Troepolsky became one of the first Honorary Citizens of Voronezh.

After "White Bim ...", unconditionally ranked among the domestic literary classics, the writer has not published a single significant work of art. This "silence", explained not only by Troepolsky's advanced age and deteriorating health, lasted almost a quarter of a century. However, it is known that he continued to write in the 1970s, and in the 1980s, and in the 1990s. The incredible success of "White Bim ..." made its author even more self-critical and forced him to "shut up" for many years. The author wanted, by all means, to stay at the level of his most famous book: “For many, the ideas of this book have become a vital staff. But for Troepolsky himself, the story was also a measure of artistic truth, a criterion of mastery. Writer's childhood

Troepolsky's biography helps to get to know this author better, to get acquainted with the main stages of his life and creative career. The author was born in 1905 in the Tambov province. He was born in the small village of Novo-Spasskoye. Now it is the territory of the Voronezh region. His father was a priest.

In total, the family had six children. It so happened that the hero of our article studied at four educational institutions. The meeting with the teacher of the second stage school in the village of Novogolskoye, Grigory Romanovich Shirma, became decisive for him.

In Troepolsky's biography, this was a decisive acquaintance. He himself later admitted that he would hardly have become a writer if he had not met this teacher. He worked to get his students to think about what they read.

Labor career

Having received a secondary education, Troepolsky began working as a teacher in the villages of Makhrovka and Pitim. Then he first began to try to write. These were hunting notes and sketches of peasant life.

An important role in Troepolsky's creative biography was played by his acquaintance with the writer Nikandrov, who had been published before the revolution. It was the first professional writer in his life, who gave a lot of useful advice.

In the early 1930s, Troepolsky became an agronomist, was in charge of a variety testing site, and supervised the selection of millet. Published in agricultural magazines.

He lived in Ostrogozhsk for about 20 years. All this time he took part in the work of the literary group at the newspaper "New Life".

First publications

In the early 1950s, the Novy Mir magazine published a whole selection of his ironic stories under the general title "From the notes of an agronomist." This publication had a negative impact on the biography of Gabriel Troepolsky. The regional committee of the party recognized the work as spiteful and slanderous. Alexander Tvardovsky supported the beginning writer. Since then, almost all of his stories, essays and articles have been published on the pages of this thick literary magazine.

Troepolsky often came to Tvardovsky, discussed new ideas with him, fed on additional creative energy.

The collection "From the notes of an agronomist" brought him popularity. Based on it, Troepolsky even wrote a script, and film director Stanislav Rostotsky made the film "Earth and People".

Essays on agricultural topics

In 1959, a significant event took place in the biography of Gavriil Nikolaevich Troepolsky - he moved to Voronezh.

In the second half of the 20th century, the hero of our article became one of the most successful and popular authors of essays and journalism on the topic of agriculture. In 1965, a series of essays by Troepolsky entitled "On Rivers, Soils, and Others" was published in Novy Mir. The writer on his own "Muscovite" traveled all the regions of the Central Chernozem region, collecting large-scale material in defense of the environment.

Also, his notable works of that period are the ironic story "Candidate of Sciences", the story "In the Reeds", the novel "Chernozem", which tells about the tragic consequences of collectivization.

For a decade and a half, Troepolsky was a member of the editorial board of an authoritative publication called "Our Contemporary", was a member of the leadership of the Writers' Union of the USSR.

"White Bim Black Ear"

The hero of our article created his main and most popular work in 1971. This is a story called "White Bim Black Ear". In the biography of Troepolsky, she played an important role. Tvardovsky himself became its first reader. He was going to publish it in Novy Mir, but in 1970 he was removed from his post as editor-in-chief.

Then Troepolsky took it to the magazine Our Contemporary. The product immediately fell in love with millions. It is worth noting that it was written in a different manner than all the previous books of the author. Troepolsky worked on it for 6 years.

At first, the narrative was supposed to be at the center of a certain "ideal person". He walked through life, met with all sorts of characters and types. But it always turned out to be some far-fetched figure, some kind of angel in the flesh. Then the idea to build a plot around a dog appeared.

The plot of the story

The story tells about the Scottish setter Beam, who lives with his owner, pensioner Ivan Ivanovich. He is a front-line soldier and a former journalist who is now fond of hunting.

One day, a fragment that remains next to the heart since the war makes itself felt. Ivan Ivanovich is sent for an operation in Moscow, and the care of the dog falls on the shoulders of a neighbor. She follows him badly, somehow he runs out of the apartment and goes in search of the owner. On his way, Bim meets many different people, they treat him with pity, compassion, many try to help, but he also has to face cruelty.

Bim almost waits for the return of the owner, but at the last moment he becomes a victim of a slander from a neighbor, he is taken to a shelter. Ivan Ivanovich finds the already dead body of his dog.

The success of the story

He also received the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the honorary title of Honored Worker of Culture of the RSFSR.

In 1977, director Rostotsky made a film of the same name, which was even nominated for an Oscar. But the winner in the category "Best Foreign Language Film" was Moshe Mizrahi's French drama "All Life Ahead."

A radio play was put on. And in the Voronezh Puppet Theater for many years, the performance of the same name has been successfully staged.

In the brief biography of Troepolsky, which you are now reading, it should be noted that the writer died in Voronezh in 1995. He was 89 years old. He was buried on the Walk of Fame at the Comintern Cemetery. Streets in Voronezh itself and Ostrogozhsk are named after him, where he lived for about 20 years.

In front of the puppet theater in Voronezh today there is a monument to its most famous literary character - the dog White Bim Black Ear. In 2005, the centenary of the writer's birth was widely celebrated in Voronezh, and a large number of studies devoted to the work of the prose writer appeared.

The figure of Troepolsky turned out to be attractive for painters as well. For example, the popular creator of engravings Masabih Akhunov made his portrait.

There is a portrait of the writer, made by the artist Ivan Lopatin. He specially created it for the gallery of honorary and famous citizens of Voronezh. Viktor Mitin painted a portrait of Troepolsky in oil.

Gavriil Nikolayevich Troepolsky was born in 1905 in the village of Novo-Spasskoye (now it is the Gribanovsky district of the Voronezh region). The family of the parents of the future publicist and prose writer had six children. Gabriel's father, Nikolai Semenovich, was a clergyman.

The future writer in his youth seriously thought about a profession related to agriculture. In 1924, Gabriel graduated from an agricultural school. But Troepolsky began his professional career as a village teacher.

In 1931, Gavriil Nikolaevich got a job at the stronghold of the experimental station in Voronezh. Subsequently, he took the position of head of the state variety testing plot of grain crops. The direction of his work is the selection of millet. Troepolsky brought out several new varieties of this useful crop.

During the war, Troepolsky carried out assignments from front-line Soviet intelligence.

In 1976, the writer joined the editorial board of the Our Contemporary magazine and worked there until 1987. Troepolsky was also a board member of the Union of Writers of the USSR.

The beginning of the creative path of Gavriil Troepolsky

Gavriil Nikolaevich wrote his first story back in 1937, choosing the pseudonym Lirvag. The writer's new stories appeared in the Novy Mir magazine in 1953. It was then that Troepolsky decided to devote his life entirely to literary creativity. The writer settled in Voronezh.

The writer knew perfectly well how the village lives. He had a wealth of experience working in the countryside. In his works, Troepolsky tried to be extremely sincere. He was not afraid to portray the negative phenomena of reality.

The cycle of his satirical stories "From the notes of an agronomist" (1953) marked the beginning of a new approach to depicting life in the countryside. The main features of this approach are the sharpness of the formulation of problems and truthfulness.

In 1958, Troepolsky's satirical story "Candidate of Sciences" was published. It was followed by the novel "Chernozem", which dealt with the Soviet village of the 20s of the last century.

However, the true fame and love of the reader brought Troepolsky the story "White Bim Black Ear", written in 1971. Five years after the first publication of this book, the author received the USSR State Prize for it. The work raises important moral issues. The story about the tragic fate of the dog is intertwined with descriptions of pictures of nature and life in the city. The story of Bim has become a litmus test, on which one can test the sharpness and purity of a moral feeling.

The books of Gavriil Nikolaevich have been translated into the languages of the peoples of the Soviet Union and into the languages of many countries of the world.

For merits in his work, the writer was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
