Tinting film for windows - features of selection and self-installation. Solar control film for windows: Advantages, types of films, how to apply correctly How to apply mirror sun control film to windows

The desire to cover a window with film usually arises during the summer heat, when the merciless rays of the sun penetrate the room. And someone wants to protect themselves from prying eyes. In any case, there is a problem and there is a solution.

Below are instructions on how to apply solar film to windows. The technology is suitable for gluing ordinary wooden windows and double-glazed windows (metal-plastic, PVC).

For your information, you can stick the film on window glass yourself without having any specific skills. A minimum set of tools will be required:

  • detergent, designed for windows
  • mechanical water sprayer
  • rubber staple (or plastic)
  • sharp knife

According to the pasting rules established by technological
characteristics of the film, the ambient temperature should not be lower than 5-7 °C.
It is not recommended to glue the film on a hot day. High temperature outdoor
air increases the elasticity of the film, which can cause it to deform.

How to glue film on windows - technology

  • Wash the window glass thoroughly (preferably on both sides).
  • Using a spray bottle, apply to the adhesive film
    surface and glass a solution of liquid soap diluted with water (not much
    shake so that a lot of foam does not form). Soap will give an opportunity
    Move the film freely across the glass to the desired position.
  • Apply the film to the glass. As soon as the film has “settled”, carefully
    using staple movements, smooth the film until bubbles are removed (smoothing is necessary
    perform from the center to the edges). When the surface is perfectly flat, give
    dry.
  • You can trim off the excess edges of the film after it has completely dried (in
    In principle, you can cut the desired size before gluing, but there is a possibility that
    there is a gap somewhere).

How to stick anti-vandal film on windows

Anti-vandal window film has specific features, so its gluing principle is different.

Before starting work, wash and dry thoroughly
glass windows. Moisture is not allowed! Don't forget about temperature conditions- temperature
ambient air not lower than 5-7 °C

We first prepare a special composition (how to prepare it
will be described in the instructions for the film), which we will subsequently apply to
film (the solution reacts with the adhesive base of the film and dissolves it).

We lay the film, aligning it on the glass, and push it out with a staple
air from under the film. Complete drying of the anti-vandal film lasts 3-4 months.
Make sure that during this time the mechanical impact
external factors on the window were minimal.

Tools for installing solar control film on a window

To install the film, use the following set of tools:

SCRAPS

Designed for mechanical cleaning of glass. We recommend taking scrapers: Triumph SMT-51 (6”) and SMT-106 (3”). They remove all contaminants (dried paint, stuck particles) without leaving scratches on the glass surface.

STREET CLEANER

AND WASHERS

A squeegee holder (SMT-12) with a remover in the profile (SMT-17 or SMT-15) helps remove installation and cleaning solutions from the surface of glass and film.

FORCINGAND

We offer to buy DELUXE distillations:

  • to remove residual water from under the film - SMT-23 or SMT-21;
  • for rolling the edges of the material - SMT-45 or SMT-39.

With their help, the film will “lay” well on the glass.

ADDITIONAL TOOL

To stick solar control film on a window, you will also need the following tool:

  • ruler (1.5 m);
  • square;
  • marker (SMT-32) or pencil;
  • sprayer (manual or pump);
  • paper napkins (lint-free);
  • neutral shampoo;
  • sponge.

It is advisable to use filtered or distilled water for film installation. It should not contain any mechanical impurities (sand, rust).

It is important to use tools from trusted brands when installing solar control film on the window. Homemade and low-quality devices leave scratches, air bubbles and other defects on the glass.

How to glue sun protection film to glass: instructions

This procedure includes a number of sequential activities. First of all, you need to prepare the room in which the film will be installed. It should be: dry, clean and protected from drafts so that small particles of dust from the air do not get under the film. The temperature in the room is not higher than +30°C and not lower than +10°C. Recommended air humidity is from 20 to 80%.

Detailed instructions on how to properly apply solar control film to windows:

Stage No. 1. Open the films

The film is cut using a ruler, square and cutting knife on a perfectly flat table. The width and length of the sheet must correspond to the dimensions of the glass + 10 mm for cutting on each side (or 15 mm when installing the film on a double-glazed window in a window structure).

If you plan to tint several windows at once, use a marker to number each cut piece in accordance with the window layout. This will help avoid mistakes and save time.

Stage No. 2. Glass cleaning

To thoroughly clean the glass surface, you need:

✓ Make a solution: mix 0.5 liters of water with 3-4 drops of neutral shampoo. The proportion may vary depending on the hardness of the water.

✓ Pour the solution into a sprayer and spray the liquid onto the glass. Rub with a sponge soap solution on the surface of the glass.

✓ Clean the glass from adhering particles, dried paint and remaining dirt. To do this you will need a scraper with a metal blade. Cleaning must be done in 2 directions: vertical and horizontal.

✓ Wipe paper napkin glass edges to remove dirt and dust.

✓ Spray the previously prepared solution onto the glass again. Walk 3-4 times along the glass surface with a rubber wiper in horizontal and vertical directions. After each pass, it is recommended to wash the instrument with a clean solution.

✓ Do not use ready-made products containing ammonia (for example, “Mr. Muscle”) to clean glass. Residues of ammonia can deactivate the adhesive on the film, and it will not stick well.

After these procedures have been completed, you can begin to glue the solar control film onto the window.

Stage No. 3. Installation (rolling) of film

To install the film you need:

✓ Spray the solution generously from a spray bottle onto the desired piece of film and the surface of the glass. When removing the protective layer, this will reduce the ingress of dust onto the adhesive to a minimum.

✓ Layer the sun protection film starting from the corner, i.e. remove part of the protective lavsan. Next, continuing to moisten the opening adhesive base with the solution, slowly and as carefully as possible remove the lavsan from the entire sheet. It is advisable to use two people to separate the material: one holds the corners of the film from above (be sure to wet your fingers with soapy water so that there are no fingerprints left on the corners of the film!), the other wets and removes the protective layer. If there is no assistant: spray the glass with the solution, apply a film to it and carefully remove the lavsan, not forgetting to constantly wet it.

✓ Place the film on the glass with the adhesive side and wet the outside of the material to ensure good glide of the tool. Next, you need to carefully smooth the film with a rubber wiper, driving out the water from under the sheet.

✓ Remove remaining liquid with polyurethane distillation. The tool should be moved from the center to the edges, without missing a single section. The more effort you put into squeezing out the moisture, the faster the film will dry.

✓ Trim the edges of the film at an angle of 15°-20° using a cutting knife. There should be a distance of 3-5 mm from the edges of the glass to the edges of the film. The gap increases depending on the thickness of the material: the thicker, the larger. When tinting glass that will subsequently be assembled into a double-glazed window, you need to find out in advance the dimensions of the design distance. This will help make the correct gap.

✓ Roll the edges of the sheet by pressing and press them using a forcing wrapped in several layers of napkins or just napkins.

The final stage is to put the glass to dry if gluing occurs in the window production. This will take several days. About a day after installing the solar control film on the window, you should inspect the work and, if necessary, correct defects.

If you need to dry several glasses with film, it is recommended to arrange them so that there is a gap between them for ventilation (i.e., do not dry in a “pack”).

How to eliminate defects after installing solar control film on windows?

During and after installing the film on glass, the following troubles may arise:

  • Bubbles (lenses) of water . You can try to squeeze out the remaining moisture to the nearest edge of the material by squeezing. If the glue has already hardened, you need to pierce the swollen area with a needle and carefully remove the liquid.
  • Fogging and appearance of cloudy spots on the film . Is a visual effect, not an installation defect! Appears due to the fact that a soap solution remains under the film. Minor cloudiness evaporates through micropores in the material after a few days when exposed to sunlight and heat.
  • Fast adhesion of film to glass . If installation is carried out at high temperatures on a hot surface, the film will very quickly “stick” to the glass and thus make smoothing difficult. In case of heat, we recommend spraying the adhesive layer and glass more generously with the solution. In this case, the lavsan is removed as the material is rolled in.
  • Garbage under the film. Large amounts of debris cannot be removed; re-gluing is required.

Remember, glass with film can be passed through a washing machine for window production or wash after 3-7 days.

This instruction tells you how to install the film on flat glass. The process of tinting spherical car windows is much more complicated. There you will need another tool and a hair dryer (blower). Main product options and their features

Foil for solar windows can be different, I will tell you about the options that are most common. We will figure out how best to attach them, what are the pros and cons of this or that solution, and in what situations it is better to use a certain type of product.

Option 1 - regular foil

This solution has several undoubted advantages:

Reasonable price In some respects, and in cost, this option has no equal; baking foil has affordable price. If you need to solve a heat problem with minimal costs, then there is simply no better way to find this method.
Availability You can buy the material both in hardware and grocery stores, which have a small section with little things useful for housewives. Roughly speaking, you can go out to buy bread and buy everything needed to build a sun protection system
Efficiency The surface of the foil reflects the sun's rays very well, thereby allowing you to significantly reduce the temperature in the room without the use of special equipment
Ease of use The work does not require any special tools or equipment; fastening is done very quickly and very simply; below we will discuss this process in detail.

Naturally, this option also has its disadvantages:

  • Most main drawback This is because aluminum foil is opaque, so if you cover the windows completely with it, the room will be dark. Alternatively, you can close the window opening only partially, this will reduce efficiency, but will provide the room with at least some natural light;
  • Another minus - not very attractive appearance. Of course, if you need to quickly solve a problem and the view is not important, you can ignore this aspect, but still many people want the window to look more or less decent;
  • If you don’t know how to stick foil on a window and listen to the advice of pseudo-masters, then it’s very easy to ruin the surface. Incorrect fastening makes the process of removing the foil very long and tedious; you will have to sit by the window for more than one hour.

Let's figure out how the installation is carried out. I first read information on this issue on the Internet and you know what I discovered? That the request “how to remove foil from a window” is much more common than the question of how to glue it.

The fact is that many people attach foil as a tint - they apply a soap solution to the glass, apply the material and expel the moisture from under it. As a result, when you need to remove the protection, it turns out that the foil comes off in small pieces and there is simply no other way out except to pore over the window with a blade or a construction knife.

I'll talk about more in a simple way, it may be less attractive, but it takes a little time, and removing the foil later is not difficult.

Before gluing the material onto glass, you need to stock up on everything you need, the list is very simple:

  • Foil in the required quantity, to determine how much of it is needed, measure the area of the glass, then on the spot you can navigate based on the width and length of the rolls;
  • Scotch tape - the most common option will do, but you can also use a narrow one, the work with it will be a little more difficult, but removal will be much easier;
  • Scissors are needed for cutting materials during work.

The work is done like this:

  • First, the window is wiped so that there is no dust on the glass and frame, which will allow the tape to adhere much more reliably;
  • Next, you need to take measurements to determine what pieces the foil will be cut into. For work, it is better to adapt either a large table or free up space on the floor, since the material is very fragile and can be easily damaged;
  • The cut piece of foil is placed on the surface, after which you need to glue a piece of tape to the top side so that it extends halfway onto the material;
  • Next, the element is fixed on the window; it is better to glue it to the frame, but you can also directly onto the glass, it all depends on the situation;

It is better to glue the foil strips together on the window, and not on the floor or table, it will be much easier.

  • And don’t forget that the material is opaque, so before you seal individual areas, you need to decide which part of the structure you will leave open. Try to choose the area that receives the least amount of sun.

A little advice about removal - after peeling off the tape, traces of glue may remain, which is easiest to wipe off with a window cleaner.

Option 2 – curtain film for windows

This is a more reliable type of product, which is specifically designed for use in window structures. Solar control film-curtain has a number of important advantages:

  • Strength – this material is much more reliable than fragile foil, therefore it is easier to work with; you will not be afraid of damaging the surface with one careless movement;
  • Convenient sizes - products are sold in rolls 60-100 cm wide and 3 m long, this configuration is well suited for window structures;
  • Affordable cost - one roll will cost you only 100 rubles, and this is with quality many times better than that of simple foil;
  • Attractiveness - if you carry out the installation in accordance with all the recommendations, then your windows will look very neat and even presentable;
  • Transparency - the film reflects light from the outside, but almost does not limit the view from the inside, only slightly darkening the glass. Thanks to this, you can safely cover the entire area and provide maximum effective protection from the summer sun.
  • There are two product options, each of which has its own advantages. One option is glued to glass, and the second is used as a curtain, each has its own advantages, and it’s up to you to choose a specific solution.

Do not buy products from Agrokhoztorg, as this is the most unreliable option on the market. The packaging says “Beware of fakes,” but the original is not distinguished by its quality - there are cases when the material became unusable the next day after gluing it, and it was almost impossible to tear it off.

Now let's figure out how to do the work with our own hands, I'll start the review with more simple option, which is called “sunscreen curtains” and can have different sizes. The workflow with this type of product is extremely simple:

  • Before sticking the curtain, you need to wipe it top part frames, the material will attach much better to a clean surface;
  • Next, you need to unfold the canvas, make sure that it fits, then remove the protective film from the top adhesive strip and press it tightly to the frame, and the installation is complete.

The film allows light to pass through and can be pulled back like a curtain if necessary, which is very convenient.

Now let’s look at the option that is glued to glass; here the instructions for carrying out the work are more complex:

  • First, you need to wash the window very well; if there are any specks or stains on it, the film will only emphasize them and ruin the entire appearance of the window opening. For washing, use any means, the main thing is that the surface is clean;
  • Measurements are then taken to determine the dimensions of our glazed areas. After this, you need to cut the material, but not exactly according to the parameters, but with a margin of 5 mm in all directions, this will eliminate defects when there is a gap around the perimeter, and will simplify your work, because slight distortions are easily compensated for by the supply of material;
  • The surface should be moistened generously with soapy water; this will prevent the film from immediately sticking to the glass and will help adjust its position. The easiest way to work is to use a spray bottle so as not to flood the entire window structure;
  • The protective layer is also removed from the reflective material and the same soap solution is applied to the surface. You should not have any questions about which side to glue the material on - the reflective surface always faces outward, and it is this that should be moistened very generously;
  • The prepared element is carefully placed on the glass; thanks to the soap solution, the film moves well along the base, and you need to align it in the optimal position. There should be no large folds on the surface;
  • Moisture is removed from under the film either with a regular rag or with a rubber spatula, if you have one at hand. Work is done from the center to the edges, make sure that there is no moisture left anywhere;
  • Lastly, the blade cuts off excess material around the perimeter, after which you can enjoy the result of the work.

How to stick sun protection film

The film should be applied to a clean, washed (preferably both sides) window. In order to glue the solar control film, you need to cut it to the size of the glass, separate the protective layer, spray the glass with soapy water and apply the film. The use of soap is recommended to make it easier to move the film on the glass during gluing. Then use a rag to remove air and water bubbles from under the film. After this, trim the protruding edges of the film with a blade or sharp knife.

It is advisable not to wash glass with film during the first month of operation; in the future, you don’t have to worry about the safety of the film when washing windows. Below is a video about gluing the solar control film.

i-glue.ru

Let's start in order. There are different types of solar control film for windows. It varies in tinting density, spray color, method of installation and removal from windows. Physically, window film consists of a regular transparent film on which a thin layer of metal is sprayed. Moreover, the instructions clearly indicate that the film should be glued to the glass using this “metallic” layer. If you stick it the other way around, then firstly, the effect of reflecting sunlight will not be achieved, the effect of the film in this case is much lower, and secondly, it cannot be peeled off from the glass.

If you turn to professionals for help, they will come to your home or office and stick the film on the windows themselves. Moreover, they use reliable, proven film and know how to glue it so that there are no bubbles left and the window does not lose its transparent properties. A well-adhered film is not even noticeable on the glass and its presence can only be detected by opening the window and making sure that the street is much lighter than it seems.

But professional services are expensive, and good film costs a pretty penny. So, for example, if I have seven windows in my apartment, then applying the film by professionals turns into a very significant waste. When I took the prices and received a price for the service that was in the five figures, I felt a little uncomfortable. The desire to save money and make do on our own grew stronger with every sunny day. Looking ahead, I can say that it would have been easier to immediately install climatic double-glazed windows with silver coating and argon inside and forget about the problem for many years.

Well, to be completely honest, I don’t really trust professionals, because quite often among them there are random people who will do the job according to the principle of a blunder, and if you start to be indignant, they will send you away. I’m not a brawler by nature, but I’m already a little tired of “wiping up the puddles” of so-called professionals.

Therefore, when another spring arrived, and the sun powerfully reminded itself, I headed to the store to buy window film. This kind of film is now sold in almost every hardware store. And then it was a terrible shortage. Therefore, I was very happy when I managed to find and purchase several rolls of the coveted product.

This is the film I managed to buy.

I hope by now this manufacturer has gone bankrupt and ceased to exist. At least his website is no longer open. I developed such a “kind” attitude towards a representative of the domestic industry after using his miracle products.

The fact is that the metal layer on the film was applied extremely unevenly. There were places with a very thick layer, while in others there was practically no layer.

Let's ignore the fact that I didn't glue the film onto the glass very carefully. This was the first experience. There were still bubbles that, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get rid of. I know that a real professional would be horrified and would make an appropriate verdict about my mental incompetence :). The problem shown in this image is the uneven density of the metal layer. In fact, there are three pieces glued here at once. Notice the wide piece on the left. On the left side it is quite normal, but the closer to the right edge (in the middle of the window), the more transparent the film becomes.

The most striking thing was that this unevenness was already revealed after sticking the film on the window. I pasted it using ordinary water. Just not from the tap - we have a lot of bleach and other nasty things there - but clean spring water.

I didn’t want to go for another batch of film, which could turn out to be just as successful. The film remained stuck to the glass all summer. In principle, in part it really saved me from the harsh rays of the sun in the summer.

But the main “ambush” awaited me in the fall, when it was time to shoot the film.

In those areas where the metal layer was normal, everything went without complications. But the areas devoid of the metal layer turned out to be tightly stuck to the glass. Even in the summer heat, I noticed that the film was very hot from the sun. Apparently the layer adjacent to the glass has softened a little and “grabbed” tightly.

In order to scrape off the protective film, I had to use tools. Naturally, the surface of the glass was scratched. Next, banal claws were used :). Things went faster and without scratches on the surface. The film was removed in small pieces and was completely transparent:

On one window on the balcony, I never bothered to remove the film from the glass. I just wouldn't have the patience.

I called the manufacturer at the phone number indicated on the package. The director himself answered. I started telling him about the problems with his products, but he wasn't very impressed. After swallowing another piece of sandwich (he was constantly eating something during the conversation), he suggested that I go to court and hung up.

Of course, I didn’t go to court. A roll of film cost about 60 rubles, but the fact that I spent a lot of time and ruined the windows removing it still had to be proven. Apparently the manufacturer knew that no one would sue him over these kopecks, so he could safely send everyone to court, and he himself would drive out the defect with complete impunity.

This happened in 2010. Since then I have not supported Russian manufacturer, but I buy imported German film from EMTEC. Sticks on and removes with one touch. No bubbles or “undeveloped” areas% experience is a gainful experience. No problem, although it costs four times more.

There is a Russian film with similar quality:

Sometimes I buy it.

But now I’m already a scientist: before I start putting film on the windows, I first roll out the roll and look at it against the light. Fortunately, we haven’t come across any more such “successful” rolls yet.

And one more thing: it is better not to glue the film onto the glass, but to attach it to the frame using tape. This is more convenient, there are no bubbles left and then, after removal, you don’t have to wash the windows to remove streaks.

So, buying tint film for windows, be careful. Beware of counterfeits and machinations of domestic manufacturers. If you really can’t bear the heat, spend a little more and order a sticker from a trusted company. Or consider installing spray-coated double-glazed windows. They have quite a few interesting features that you don't even know about. At the same time, you will save on heating.

If you are tormented by unbearable heat, stuffiness and bright light, if the sunny side of your home is constantly heated to sauna temperature in the summer, then a universal, simple remedy will help solve all these problems - sun protection tinting or mirror film.

It will be a real salvation in the hot summer season, when it is difficult to hide from the sun even at home.

Currently, there are more than a dozen types of tinted solar control film for windows, which differ in the degree of shading, density and method of gluing, as well as cost and service life.

Advantages of film and methods of its installation

After gluing the mirror film, you will receive the following benefits:

  • Ultraviolet delay by 98% - harmful rays will not enter the rooms, but the illumination will not change in brightness.
  • Possibility of dismantling the product if not needed - after the end of the hot season, the film is removed (subject to certain conditions, which we will talk about later).
  • Sufficient lighting - now working at the computer or watching a movie will only be a pleasure and you won’t have to constantly turn the screen away from the sun.
  • Protection from prying eyes during the daytime - the mirror surface will hide the entire room, and passers-by will not be able to look into your window. All they will see is their reflection.
  • Reliable fastening of glass fragments - with the film glued broken glass will not fall apart, and fragments will not fly into the apartment.
  • IN winter time The sun protection film will serve as an obstacle to the release of heat and will help accumulate it more efficiently.

Installation of mirror sun protection film

If necessary, you can do the work of gluing film on windows on your own, however, if you have no idea how to glue tint on apartment windows, it is better to use the services of professionals or at least carefully study the technology and each stage of such work.

To apply the film yourself, you will need the following tools:

  1. Scraper,
  2. Spray,
  3. Stationery knife,
  4. Mild detergent
  5. Soft rubber or plastic spatula.

The film has an adhesive base, that is, it is a self-adhesive product.

To begin work, it is necessary to prepare the glass.

  1. Cleaning glass from dirt using mild detergents.
  2. Removing old stains and marks using scrapers. If there is any glue left on the surface of the glass plastic windows, you will need to use a metal or wooden tool to remove the composition.
  3. After cleaning the glass, wipe it thoroughly dry. A towel made of any soft fabric, such as microfiber, is ideal for this purpose.
  4. After the preparatory work is completed, it is necessary to take measurements and cut the film, and then you can proceed to the direct installation of tinting, which is carried out in several steps:
  5. Moisten the glass using soft purified water with the addition of detergent, liquid soap or baby shampoo.
  6. Freeing the film from the protective layer.
  7. Applying a solar control film to the surface of the window, uniformly distributing the material over the entire area of the glass.
  8. If the edges extend beyond the glass, they should be carefully trimmed with a knife.
  9. Remaining water is removed from under the pasted film using a spatula.
  10. The refinished window must be left to dry completely, which usually takes about a week.
  11. Having completed all the steps described above, you will soon be able to enjoy high-quality tinting that will protect your home from the hot and bright sun in any weather.

Anyone can handle the installation, even if you have never glued similar products before, you just need to approach this task responsibly.

Disadvantages of a mirror surface

Let's consider the possible disadvantages related specifically to the mirror coating.

  • The film has mirror surface on the side where it is lighter. That is, during the day it will be lighter from the street side and for passers-by the glass will be a real impenetrable mirror. But in the evening and at night you will have to use curtains or blinds, because now it will be lighter on your side and it will not be difficult for onlookers to look out the window, especially on the first floors.
  • Another disadvantage is the difficulty of dismantling if properly glued according to the instructions.

Otherwise, this method of sun protection can be considered universal. You will always be safe, keep your things from fading.

An additional bonus will be the reasonable cost.

  • window cleaner
  • mechanical water sprayer
  • rubber staple (or plastic)
  • sharp knife

According to the rules of pasting, established by the technological characteristics of the film, the ambient temperature should not be lower than 5-7 ° C. It is not recommended to glue the film on a hot day. High outside temperatures increase the elasticity of the film, which can cause it to deform.

How to glue film on windows - technology

  • Wash the window glass thoroughly (preferably on both sides).

  • Using a spray bottle, apply a solution of liquid soap diluted with water to the adhesive film surface and glass (do not shake vigorously so that a lot of foam does not form). The soap will make it possible to freely move the film on the glass to the desired position.

  • Apply the film to the glass. As soon as the film has “settled”, smooth the film with gentle movements of the staple until the bubbles are removed (smoothing should be done from the center to the edges). When the surface is perfectly smooth, let it dry.

  • You can trim off the excess edges of the film after it has completely dried (in principle, you can cut the desired size before gluing, but there is a possibility that a gap will form somewhere).

How to stick anti-vandal film on windows

Anti-vandal window film has specific features, so its gluing principle is different.

Before starting work, thoroughly wash and dry the window glass. Moisture is not allowed! Do not forget about the temperature regime - the ambient temperature is not lower than 5-7 ° C

We first prepare a special composition (how to prepare it will be described in the instructions for the film), which we will subsequently apply to the film (the solution reacts with the adhesive base of the film and dissolves it).

We lay the film, leveling it on the glass, and use a staple to expel the air from under the film. Complete drying of the anti-vandal film lasts 3-4 months. Make sure that during this time the mechanical impact of external factors on the window is minimal.

Covering windows with film: what it does and how it’s done

Few people want to become the hero of the show “Behind the Glass.” But living in your own home or on the first floor of a high-rise building does not exclude such a possibility. The reason may be simple forgetfulness or simply a reluctance to curtain the windows during the day. But you can solve this problem once and for all, and self-adhesive window film will help you do this.

I had such a need from the moment residents moved into the house built nearby. And along with it comes the need to study the types of films and methods of gluing them.

Which film to choose

In principle, I am a rather prudent woman, and I took care of sun protection when I ordered new windows. Ours are energy-saving, with a UV filter. And tulle on them is an excellent remedy for prying prying eyes.

But not so long ago we were lucky enough to buy a plastic front door. Glazed. But completely transparent. Since a door of non-standard sizes to order would have cost twice as much, we took this one without quibbling.

In fact, there are two problems: the neighbors' windows opposite and visitors, who are not always welcome, but there is no opportunity to pretend that we are not at home. They see us. But we need to see who is standing behind the door, while remaining invisible ourselves. Did you explain it clearly?

A mirrored self-adhesive film would just cope with this task: the uninvited guest will only admire his own reflection, and meanwhile we will make grimaces behind the glass. With the lights on, of course, it won’t work, but in the evening we curtain the windows and close the first door leading to the veranda.

Yes, that's how bad we are. But closer to the point - it’s time to choose a film and learn how to glue it. Because calling a specialist for such a volume of work is simply ridiculous.

Sun protection

Sun protection films (including car films) are the most popular. With their help you can:

  • Regulate the penetration of sunlight into the room, as they have different degrees of transparency.

  • This is wonderful protection of curtains and upholstery from fading, and house plants - from the aggressive effects of ultraviolet rays.
  • And also the ability to maintain a comfortable air temperature in the room, as they reflect UV rays from the street and infrared heat from the room, allowing you to save on air conditioning and heating.

Decorative

Self-adhesive film for windows can be colored, mirrored, matte, stained glass, or have an ornament or pattern on the surface.

Protective (anti-vandal)

Such films are multifunctional and can protect not only from light and prying eyes, but also from specific actions. Namely:

  • From fragments. Even If the glass manages to break, it will not shatter into small pieces that can cause significant injury. Relevant for families with small children;
  • From penetration. In general, glass sealed with film is very difficult to break, especially if you choose a material of the highest protection class A3 0.6 mm, capable of withstanding an impact of 9.5 J or 182 kg/cm 2 . The maximum that an attacker can achieve is the appearance of cracks on the glass. There are thinner films, with less impressive characteristics: A1 with a thickness of 0.24 mm and A2 with a thickness of 0.412 mm.

  • From vibration of sound waves. Simply put, you can protect yourself from wiretapping with your own hands. It is unlikely that ordinary people need this - just for information.
  • From a bullet from a pneumatic or traumatic weapon. Also, just in case.
  • From the spread of fire. If the glass breaks in a fire, the film will not allow air from the street to enter the room, so the flame will spread at a lower speed.

We don’t have small children, we don’t have enemies either, but from hacking glass door can be protected. Therefore, we choose a protective mirror film without a decorative pattern with a metal coating.

By the way, it can be aluminum, titanium, bronze, nickel and even silver; the price and color depend on the type of spraying, and the strength, light permeability and quality depend on its density and the number of film layers.

Self-sticking

Since I always glue the wallpaper in the house myself, I think I can handle this job, since gluing the film to the window is only a little more difficult. And the technology is very similar. Of course, if you took the glass out, processed it, and then put it back in place, it would be easier, but I won’t risk it.

Preparation

TO preparatory work include cleaning, creating suitable conditions and preparing everything that will be needed in the process itself.

I didn’t mention anything about cleaning: before work, you really need to not only thoroughly wash the glass so that there are no stains or streaks left on it that will be buried under the film, but also make sure that there is no dust in the air. As it settles on the glass and the adhesive base of the film, it worsens the quality of adhesion and spoils the appearance.

Therefore, in addition to wet cleaning It is advisable to periodically humidify the air near the window using a spray bottle. The surfaces to be joined must be wetted in any case, so this will not harm.

The entire room needs to be cleaned

  • Another sprayer for soapy water;
  • Detergent or baby shampoo;
  • Stationery;
  • Soft spatula for smoothing the film;
  • Paper towels or microfiber cloths.

It remains to make sure that air temperature in the operation area is above five and below thirty degrees- the instructions require this so that the glue does not dry too quickly, but also not for too long.

Execution

The first thing to do is to thoroughly wash the window or door on both sides using a mild detergent, rinse it and rub until the streaks disappear.

Then we unroll the film and adjust the cutting to get less waste. If the glass is large, you need to measure it in advance and try to find a film of the required width to avoid joints.

  • Add baby shampoo, Fairy or other detergent to clean water - two or three drops per half liter is enough to ensure the film slides over the surface. Just don’t shake the mixture too much - we don’t need foam at all. Pour the working fluid into a spray bottle.
  • A regular soap solution may not be suitable for gluing anti-vandal film.. Therefore, we look at the instructions, which describe the preparation of a working solution that can dissolve the adhesive base.
  • We cut off a piece of the required size from the roll with a small allowance in length and width, and only after that, laying it on a flat surface, remove the protective layer from the adhesive side, wetting the freed surface with soapy water from a spray bottle. We spray the glass with it.
  • Now let's talk about how to glue film onto window glass. It must be carefully and slowly lifted, holding the top edge, and applied as accurately as possible to the opening. Slowly - because sudden movements often lead to bending of the film, and it sticks to itself. It is almost impossible to unstick the glued areas without damaging the material; this piece will simply have to be thrown away.

  • If this step is done without incident, then it will be easier, since the film glides well on wet glass and can be moved to achieve the desired position. And only after that you can begin to drive the water out from under it.
  • If you know how to glue wallpaper, then you know perfectly well how to stick it without bubbles: to do this, use a spatula from the middle to the edges to make smooth movements with pressure. And in order not to scratch the film, the spatula must be moistened with water. The squeezed out liquid is wiped off with a soft cloth.

  • Now you can trim off the excess film - it will no longer budge.

All. All you have to do is wait for it to dry completely. This will take from two weeks for regular film, up to 3-4 months for protective film. . During this time, it is better not to touch the surface., even if bubbles appear on it. They will disappear on their own.

But then no precautions are needed, the glass can be washed and wiped as usual. They say that washing windows with film is even easier than without it.

Conclusion

The video in this article shows the entire gluing process in detail and it seems that nothing could be simpler. But it only seems so. If I needed to cover all the windows in the house, I would invite specialists without hesitation for a minute. It’s somehow even awkward to bother people because of one door, I’ll try it myself.

And, of course, I will be grateful to those who have already successfully completed this task, and will tell you in the comments about the nuances that may arise in the process.

Idea to stick on windows protective coating occurs, as a rule, with the arrival of heat. It can both protect your home from the sun and prying eyes, and protect the glass from mechanical damage. Next, we’ll look at how to glue film to windows correctly, what types of film there are, and whether it’s possible to glue windows with glue. It is worth noting that this technology, which can also be seen in the presented video, is suitable for both wooden and plastic windows.

Main varieties

Today there are many types of film coating. Some of them are designed for one specific purpose, for example, to protect against exposure to ultraviolet radiation, while others combine several functions. In film production, sputtering with aluminum, bronze, as well as titanium and nickel is often used. In some cases, silver and gold plating can also be used. So, let's look at the main types of film coverings for windows:

  • Sun protection film

Tinting can almost completely block out the sun's rays. It is very often used not only to protect homes from ultraviolet radiation, but also in office buildings where paperwork is carried out. Solar control film helps to cool the room somewhat during the intense summer heat, and in the cold season, on the contrary, it helps protect against hypothermia.

  • Mirror film

This material, unlike the previous one, has mirror characteristics. Thanks to this, the coating not only protects the room from ultraviolet radiation, but also completely reflects the sun's rays, which will make the rooms cooler and more comfortable to stay in. In this case, the foil can cover both the inner and outer surfaces of the window, protecting it from fogging.

  • Shockproof coating

In addition to UV protection, shockproof film is also capable of protecting glass from mechanical damage. Most often, such materials are used in office buildings, as well as in places where a large number of people pass. IN residential premises Shockproof coating is used quite rarely. Instead, you can often find fireproof film on windows.

  • Decorative materials

Decorative film can have a wide variety of colors and various designs can be applied to it, which allows you to realize any design fantasies. This coating does not protect very well from ultraviolet radiation, but it looks very nice. Decorative film can be either transparent or matte.

How to make sun protection?

Now let's look at whether it is possible to glue solar control film to windows and how to do it correctly. First you need to prepare the following materials and tools:

  • window cleaner;
  • spatula made of rubber or plastic;
  • water spray;
  • sharp knife;
  • tinting;
  • glue.

In order to apply tint correctly, the room temperature must be at least +5°C. You should also avoid extreme heat and direct sunlight, which can deform film materials during operation. So, in order to apply solar control film to windows you need to:

  • Wash the glass on both sides using a special cleaner;
  • Using a spray bottle, apply soap solution or glue to the surface of the film;
  • carefully apply the film to the glass;
  • remove air bubbles with a spatula;
  • leave the glass at rest until completely dry, after which you can cut off the excess.

It is worth noting that the film coating can cover either the entire glass or only part of it.

Installation of mirror coatings

In order to glue mirror film on windows with your own hands, you need to prepare:

  • window cleaner;
  • scraper;
  • stationery knife;
  • spray;
  • rubber or plastic spatula;
  • foil or self-adhesive mirror film.
  • clean the glass on both sides using a special product;
  • remove old and difficult stains with a scraper;
  • Wipe the surface thoroughly with a soft cloth;
  • cut off required quantity films or foils;
  • clean the self-adhesive film from the protective layer;
  • distribute the material evenly over the surface, and cut off the excess using a stationery knife.

Usually the mirror film is completely fixed on the surface within a week. At this time, it is advisable to avoid drafts in the room.
