How to install soft roofing. How to cover a roof with a soft roof with your own hands. Round pipe output

At the dawn of history, man learned to cover the roof of his home with various soft materials. Today there are many types of them . Video editing soft roof shows how convenient it is to cover a home with such flexible and pliable materials. What options are there for arranging a soft roof? What is the technology for installing soft roofing? These questions are asked by everyone who is interested in the opportunity to equip the roof of their home with the help of modern and beautiful roofing materials.

As the name suggests, this type of roofing is flexible and elastic. You can see and feel these qualities with your own eyes only if you touch them with your hands or watch a video. Installation of soft roofing on complex roofs, thanks to these properties, often becomes the only option. Soft roofing materials have many other advantages:

  • no installation difficulties, no need for bulky equipment and a large number of workers;
  • such a roof itself is a waterproofing material, so additional layers are not needed at all;

  • thanks to little specific gravity, the load on the structural elements of the roof is significantly reduced, which makes it possible to save on other materials;
  • ease of repair. In case of damage, only a small area is changed;
  • there is no strong noise during rain, which is important for residential premises located on the attic floor;
  • when installing a soft roof, the installation technology is such that almost no waste remains;
  • Corrosion is not dangerous for such materials, since they do not contain a metal component;
  • The cost of some materials is not high.

This type of roof, like any other, has a number of disadvantages:

  • The fire resistance of soft materials is weak, since they are often based on bitumen. To a greater extent this is true for roofing felt and roofing felt. Modern technologies made it possible to increase fire resistance to acceptable levels;

  • Under a soft roof, the installation of continuous sheathing is required, which increases the total cost of the work. The exception is , which is somewhat stiffer than other materials, so its installation is possible on the sheathing with small gaps;
  • poor thermal insulation properties, which makes it necessary to install insulation.

All these pros and cons are inherent to varying degrees in certain materials for soft roofing. The installation technology is also different for everyone.

Types of materials for soft roofing

Materials for installing soft roofs are of the following main types::

  1. Bitumen mastics. Rarely used in private construction, as they are mainly used to cover horizontal or slightly sloping surfaces.
  2. Polymer membranes. Made from polyvinyl chloride and other polymers. They are glued to the prepared screed using adhesives.
  3. Roll coverings. There are self-adhesive ones or those that require heating.
  4. Soft tiles. The most popular and expensive material. Thanks to the variety of shapes and colors, it has gained great popularity. It is a piece product.
  5. Ondulin. A slate-like, ribbed sheet material made from cellulose and bitumen. Possesses the properties of hard and soft roofing materials.

All these materials have completely different technology for laying soft roofs. The installation of a roof requires careful selection of the most suitable one.

Installation of a soft roof: technology for laying rolled materials

Rolled roofing materials include: roofing felt, roofing felt, glass roofing felt, steklomas, tekloizol and euroroofing felt. They all have similar production technology. A layer of bitumen mastic with polymer components is applied to a base made of cardboard or fiberglass. If ordinary roofing felt and roofing felt, belonging to the first generation of materials, are not very popular today due to their short (5 years) service life, then the rest are actively used in construction. Modern roll materials have several colors and a 20-year service life. This allows you to cover roofs with them industrial buildings, hangars and outbuildings.

Roll materials are not very convenient when installing a soft roof. The installation technology is too complex and time-consuming. It is important to remember that this type of material can only be laid on a roof with a slight (up to 30 degrees) slope. Before starting the main work, the base is leveled, waterproofing and vapor barriers are laid, mastic and primer are prepared.

Gluing begins from the farthest corner from the point of rise to the roof. The material is glued to the base using mastic, which is heated with a burner. In the case of a self-adhesive coating, this condition is not necessary. Usually several layers are laid so that the joints overlap the next layer. Their number depends on the angle of the roof. If the roof is flat or inclined no more than 5 degrees, then 4 layers are necessary, up to 15 degrees - 3 layers, and above 2 layers are enough. Each layer of glued material is rolled with a roller.

Helpful advice! If air bubbles are detected on the roof surface during operation, it is necessary to cut them with a knife. After this, press the cut area tightly until the mastic flows.

The use of roll materials is more justified in the construction of large industrial facilities or apartment buildings with flat roofs. For private residential construction would be better suited roof made of soft tiles.

Installation of a soft roof: technology for laying piece materials

Soft or bituminous shingles are small-sized piece materials. Its length is 1 m and its width is 33 cm. Thanks to this, all installation work can be done by one person. Each canvas is divided into 4 parts in the form of different geometric shapes and resembles classic tiles.

Before laying soft tiles, the base is prepared. The sheathing must be continuous. It is often made from plywood or similar sheet materials. If necessary, an underlay carpet is laid under the entire surface or in individual places that require special attention. soft tiles. It represents a special roll material, promoting additional waterproofing.

Laying sheets starts from the cornice. The main thing is to lay the first row evenly, then it will be easier. The sheets are glued with mastic and punched with nails at the perforation points. At the final stage, the ridge and wind sheets are installed. A typical representative of bituminous shingles is the soft roofing shingles, a video installation of which shows the simplicity of the work carried out, even on complex roofs of private mansions.

Helpful advice! It is best to install asphalt shingles in hot weather. This promotes better adhesion of the material.

Whatever the soft roof made of piece materials, the use underlay carpet under soft tiles, insulation and vapor barriers - an indispensable condition for its normal functioning.

Soft roofing is considered to be sealed materials based on bitumen-impregnated fiberglass sheets. For improvement mechanical characteristics they are covered with a rubber compound. The use of inexpensive raw materials during their manufacture makes such materials relatively accessible. This article will talk about how to properly lay a soft roof, what equipment is required for this, and what needs to be done to ensure that the installation process is as simple as possible.

Stocking up on tools

All necessary tool should be present for almost everyone:

To avoid damaging your hands when attaching a soft roof, it is better to use special rubberized construction gloves.

Preparatory stage

According to the technology of laying soft roofs, the following preparatory work is carried out first:

  • the base of the roof is cleared of debris;
  • the entire area is checked for unevenness, after which leveling is carried out;
  • thoroughly dry the surface.

The quality of the preparation of the base will significantly affect the quality of the subsequent installation of the soft roof, as well as the duration of its operation. The technology for installing a soft roof implies that it should be installed only on a flat surface without flaws, which can be made from OSB boards or moisture-repellent plywood.

The procedure for installing a soft roof begins with unpacking the purchased rolls and checking them for color matching. This is done because quite often many manufacturers of the material sell the same products with different undertones, which after installation on the roof can differ significantly from each other. The weight of a sheet of soft bitumen tiles is approximately 1500 grams, which makes it possible to raise it to the desired height without the use of special equipment.

The most important thing is that during the construction of a soft roof, an angle of at least 11 degrees is maintained. It is necessary to prevent excessive mechanical loads from occurring due to the accumulation of precipitation.

Despite the fact that the material being laid has high moisture-repellent properties, it is advisable to provide additional waterproofing.

According to the technology, the covering of a soft roof should be accompanied by laying waterproofing parallel to the eaves, not forgetting to overlap at least 20 cm vertically and at least 10 cm horizontally. Insulation will make it possible to reduce the thermal conductivity of the roof, as a result of which heat in the house can be maintained as efficiently as possible. To protect the thermal insulation from condensation, moisture and steam, a special diffusion film is laid. At the same time, remember that the diffusion films should be laid parallel to the rafters so that the joints fall on the rafter legs.

Sequence of installation of a soft roof

Installation of a soft roof can be divided into three stages:

  • fixing the cornice row and starting roofing sheet;
  • fixing all other rolls;
  • installation of the ridge and its connections.

Before installing the roof, its entire base must be properly waterproofed. A valley carpet of the same color as the roof itself is installed along the entire ridge.

Installation of the starting sheet is carried out from the cornice row. The protective film is removed from the roofing sheets and glued with mastic, which is applied to a previously prepared base. The thickness of the mastic layer is determined by the type of roofing. The sheets are laid several centimeters above the bend of the cornice. The next sheet is placed end-to-end, and they are secured with nails into holes made in advance for this purpose. The same method is used to install the entire cornice row.

If the roof has a large slope, at least six nails must be used to secure the sheets. The technology of covering a roof with a soft roof implies its convenient and quick installation, as well as dismantling if necessary. The edge of the starting row of sheets is placed approximately 10 mm from the bottom section of the cornice, and all subsequent sheets are located in the same direction as the first row. All protruding edges are trimmed and coated with mastic. Upon completion of laying the finishing row, they proceed to the installation of sheets that are adjacent to the ridge.

Installation roofing material, located near the ridge, is laid by dividing the sheets into three pieces. As a result, all parts must be glued separately, so that they are placed parallel to the ridge. The ridge sheets are fixed using mastic and nails, and two sheets must be nailed at once.

Often, during the installation process, bubbles appear under a soft roof. To avoid this, they resort to partial fixation of the waterproofing carpet.

Fastening can be done using one of the following methods:

  • by spot and strip sizing;
  • nails;
  • installation of the material on a perforated base.

Such installation methods will distribute air pressure above and below the roof, which will prevent the appearance of bubbles. This type of roofing is also called breathable.

Technology for laying soft roofing around chimneys

Installation of soft roofing around smoke exhaust and ventilation pipes is carried out according to a special technology. For this purpose, a special pattern is made from the valley carpet.

It needs to be bent and cut, following specific instructions:

  • first, the front pattern is installed, placing it over the soft roof;
  • then lay the left and right patterns, placing them under the roof;
  • at the very end, the back side of the pattern is assembled;
  • bitumen or special mastic is used to seal joints;
  • It is better if the entire roof is made in a cascade for the best sealing and protection from moisture.
  • Every year in spring and autumn, it is strongly recommended to monitor the condition of the roof, ensure that no visible damage appears on it, and begin to repair it in a timely manner.
  • To get rid of leaves, branches, snow and other debris accumulated on the roof, it is better to use a soft brush. Under no circumstances should shovels, scoops or other tools equipped with a sharp steel working part be used.
  • To organize the most effective drainage of water from the roof, timely clean the gutters and gutters of debris.
  • If a large volume of snow accumulates, it is worth removing it layer by layer so as not to deform the roof.
  • If you find any damage to your roof, find out what caused it. First get rid of the cause of the deformation, and only then carry out repairs.
  • Under no circumstances should you walk on a soft roof if the outside temperature exceeds 30℃, as you are likely to damage the outer protective layer of the roofing.

Technology for laying soft roofs made of bitumen shingles: step-by-step instructions

Soft roofing is a term that combines a number of flexible roofing materials with excellent consumer properties. Its piece and roll varieties perfectly protect the house from atmospheric “misfortunes” and effectively decorate the exterior. They weigh little, do not require effort in cutting and fastening. Among the advantages is the ability to lay the coating yourself. For an ideal result, it is not necessary to have the skills of a roofer. You need skill, patience, tools and information about how the technology of laying a soft roof differs from other methods and how to properly install a roof.

Specifics of soft roofing

Materials from the soft group roofing coverings They are modified versions of the good old roofing felt. New developments borrow from their predecessor flexibility and lightness, which rightfully top the list of advantages. They have retained unshakable water-repellent properties, thanks to which the wooden base and rafter system last longer. The composition has been improved, due to which the period of flawless operation of the materials has increased threefold.

Based on the installation method, the class of soft roofing coverings is divided into three types:

  • Roll materials, supplied in the format corresponding to the name. These include bituminous descendants of roofing felt and new representatives, such as polymer membranes. Roll coverings are laid in strips. Bituminous materials are attached by fusing, polymer materials by partial or complete gluing. With their help, they are mainly used to equip flat and gently sloping roofs with slopes up to 3º, permissible up to 9º. Rolls are in demand mostly in industrial construction;
  • Roofing mastics, supplied ready-made or cold to be reheated. Sprayed or applied in a thick layer on flat roofs, resulting in a monolithic coating without seams. Reinforcing mesh is used for strengthening. The scope of application is limited to flat roofs.
  • Bituminous shingles, supplied in flexible shingle tiles. Essentially, it is an improved roofing felt material, cut into relatively small sheets. The edge of the shingles is decorated with figured petals to imitate the ceramic prototype. The back side is equipped with an adhesive strip for attaching to wooden base. Glued individually. Additionally, roofing nails or self-tapping screws are driven into each shingle. When a bitumen roof is heated by the sun's rays, the tiles are sintered and transformed into a continuous roofing shell.

In private low-rise construction, the piece variety is actively in demand, because flat and low pitched roofs above one- or two-story residential buildings are built extremely rarely. Domestic buildings have a “flat” fate, but not every owner will decide to buy membranes and mastics for the roof of a barn. This means that we will pay attention to the installation of the most popular bitumen shingles.

Step-by-step installation of bitumen shingles

Roofs with any slope and degree of architectural complexity are covered with piece flexible material. True, bitumen shingles are not recommended for roofing if the slope angle is less than 11.3º. The material is produced by numerous manufacturers. Each of them strives to provide their own products with unique qualities and properties beneficial to the installer.

Despite some differences, the technology for installing a soft roof follows the same scheme. Eat small nuances, but they are not important.

Rules for preparing the base

Flexibility is an advantage and disadvantage of bitumen coating. On the one hand, it allows you to significantly speed up the process. After all, it takes a little time and a minimum of effort to form junctions, drill pipes, and arrange valleys and cornices. On the other hand, due to the flexibility of the material, a continuous sheathing is required so that the bending shingles rest entirely on a solid, level base.

You can build a continuous sheathing before installing a soft roof:

  • from OSB-3 boards, recommended based on budget cost and sufficient strength;
  • from sheets moisture resistant plywood with FSF marking;
  • from tongue and groove or edged boards, the humidity of which should not be less than 20%.

Sheet material is laid in a staggered pattern brickwork. It is important that there are no cross-shaped joints. It is necessary that the weak areas where the slabs join are evenly distributed over the counter-lattice. Gaps of 2-3mm should be left in the seams, required for free movement. rafter system during temperature fluctuations.

The boardwalk is installed parallel to the roof overhangs. Also take a running start if the length of the board is not enough for the slope. The place where two boards meet on the slope should be supported by a counter-lattice beam, and four nails should be driven into it. Ordinary boards are secured with two nails on both sides. They must be laid so that there is a gap of 3-5mm between the longitudinal elements. Before work, edged boards are sorted. Those that are thicker should be distributed at the base of the slope, those that are lighter should be sent to the top.

Ventilation is the key to impeccable service

The excellent water-repellent properties of the bitumen coating are due to the tiny number of pores that can allow moisture and air to pass through. A reliable hydro-barrier works in both directions. Inside roofing structure Raindrops do not penetrate, but steam does not escape. If you do not provide a free path for evaporation, condensation will accumulate on wooden roof trusses and lathing. Those. a fungus will develop, because of which you will have to say goodbye to a durable roof.

For the sake of long-term, impeccable service, it is necessary to establish a system roof ventilation, including:

  • vents designed for air flow in the eaves area. In addition to the influx, they must ensure the free movement of air from bottom to top along the planes of the slopes. Vents are open channels formed by sheathing and counter-lattice;
  • ventilation gap between bitumen roofing and insulation laid on top of the vapor barrier. Designed for washing the insulation with air flow;
  • holes in the upper area roofing pie. These can be either the ends of the slopes that are not closed at the top, or specially designed vents with a plastic trunk that resembles a miniature chimney pipe.

Ventilation must be arranged in such a way as to prevent the formation of air pockets in the under-roof space.

Laying insulating carpet

Without exception, all manufacturers of asphalt shingles strongly recommend laying an additional waterproofing carpet before installing shingles. The list of materials suitable for carpet is usually indicated in the instructions. The products specified or similar in characteristics are approved for use.

Replacement is highly undesirable, because a composition incompatible with the coating will prevent the bitumen layers from joining into a monolith and will contribute to swelling. Polyethylene excluded. Ruberoid too, because the service life of a flexible roof is longer. It is unreasonable to lay less durable material under a coating designed for 15-30 years of operation.

The technology for laying an insulating carpet under flexible tiles includes two options, depending on the steepness of the roof:

  • Installation of a continuous carpet on pitched roofs with an angle of inclination from 11.3º/12º to 18º. Rolled waterproofing is laid in strips, starting from the overhang, moving towards the ridge. Each strip laid on top must overlap the previous strip with its own ten cm. If it is necessary to join two sections in one row, they are laid with an overlap of 15 cm. The overlap is carefully, but without fanaticism, coated with bitumen mastic. The insulation strips are attached to the base with roofing nails every 20-25cm. Strips of barrier water-repellent protection are laid on top of the continuous carpet in valleys and overhangs, as well as around roof junctions. Then the ridge and convex corners of the roof are equipped with the original insulating material;
  • Laying partial insulation on pitched roofs with a slope of 18º or more. In this case, the valleys and overhangs are protected with bitumen-polymer material, and only the edges of the gables, ridge and other convex corners are covered with strips of insulating carpet. Insulation, as in the previous case, is used to border the intersections of the roof with communication pipes and roof junctions. The width of the bitumen-polymer barrier along the overhangs is 50 cm, in the valleys it is 1 m, so that each of the protected slopes has 50 cm. When laying around junctions and pipes, the insulating strip is partially placed on the walls so that the material covers 20-30 cm of the vertical surface.

The installation of a flexible roof with partial waterproofing is allowed by manufacturers, but among them are ardent supporters this method No. Naturally, on steep slopes less precipitation is retained, but the circumstances are different: ice, slanting rain, etc. It's better to play it safe.

The bitumen-polymer carpet for valleys is selected to match the tiles. A slight deviation from the color of the coating is allowed if there is a desire to emphasize the lines of open grooves. It is advisable that the valleys be covered with a continuous strip of barrier insulation. But if joining of two pieces cannot be avoided, it is better to arrange it in the upper part of the roof with an overlap of 15-20 cm. There is the least load. The overlap must be coated with bitumen mastic.

Protection of gables and eaves

The perimeter of the roof is equipped with metal strips. They are needed to protect weakened areas of the sheathing from moisture and as roof design elements. The planks are laid edgewise on the edge of gables and overhangs. The edge line should coincide with the roof outline line. Fasten with roofing nails in a zigzag pattern every 10-15 cm.

If there is a need to join two planks, they are laid with an overlap of 3-5 cm, at least 2 cm. The pediment planks overlap the eaves at the corners of the roof. In places of end and joining overlaps, fasteners are hammered in after 2-3 cm.

Most flex roofing manufacturers recommend installing both types of metal protection over the underlayment. However, the developers of the Shinglas brand recommend cornice strips put it under the carpet, and the gable ones on top of it. Before installing gable and cornice strips on a plank sheathing, they also advise first nailing a block and then attaching metal protection to it.

Formation of passages through the roof

Chimneys crossing the roof, communication risers, antennas, and private ventilation openings require special arrangement. They create a potential hazard in the form of an open path for water leaks. Therefore, before installing the covering of the place roof penetration covered with sealing devices or systems. Among them:

  • Rubber seals designed to cover small diameter points. Holes for antenna, for example;
  • Polymer passage elements used to equip roof intersections with sewer and ventilation risers. They are produced specifically for arranging roofs. The passages are simply attached with nails to the continuous sheathing. Bitumen shingles are laid on top, which are actually trimmed around the passage and fixed with bitumen mastic;
  • Plastic adapters for your own roof ventilation. The holes are closed with vents, a ridge element with channels for removing fumes, and perforated devices for cornices.

Rules for arranging large passages chimneys worth considering separately. In addition to the threat of leaks, they are also a fire hazard. Chimneys are sealed in several stages:

  • the walls of the pipe are protected with parts cut from asbestos-cement slabs according to its actual dimensions;
  • A triangular strip treated with a fire retardant is installed around the perimeter of the pipe. To make it, you can split the block diagonally. A baseboard is suitable for replacement. The chimney plank is not attached to the sheathing! It must be fixed on the walls of the pipe;
  • lay flexible tiles, placing the shingles on the strip;
  • Parts are cut out from the valley carpet according to the dimensions of the pipe with the installed strip. The width of the parts is at least 50 cm. The patterns are attached with a 30-centimeter overlap to the pipe walls using glue or bitumen mastic. First, glue the front part, then the sides, and finally the back. The lower edge is placed on top of the laid tiles, the upper edge is inserted into a groove on the pipe wall;
  • Finally, the multilayer insulation system is secured by installing a metal apron and treating the joints with silicone sealant.

There is a simpler and cheaper way: the parts of the insulating lining of the pipe are cut not from carpet, but directly from galvanized metal. Then half of the work steps will disappear by themselves.

Wall junctions are sealed using a similar method. Only there is no need to install asbestos-cement protection, and the protected surfaces must be plastered and treated with a primer before installation.

Rules for laying eaves shingles

In order to create guidelines for the installer, it is better to first mark the roof with coated construction lace. Horizontal lines are drawn in increments of five rows flexible tiles. Verticals are struck in increments of one shingle.

After preparing and marking the roofing surface, you can safely begin laying flexible tiles, following the algorithm:

  • The first to be installed is the cornice row of tiles on the overhang. You can take a special ridge-eaves tile or cut out the starting element yourself by trimming the petals of ordinary ordinary tiles. You need to step back 0.8-1 cm from the edge of the metal cornice strip and glue the cornice shingles. For gluing, you need to remove the protective tape from the adhesive layer and coat the remaining areas with mastic;
  • the laid eaves tiles are secured with roofing nails in increments equal to the width of the petal. When driving in, the wide head of the hardware must be strictly parallel to the surface of the continuous sheathing. Distortions are unacceptable. Hammer the nails at a distance of 2-3cm from the top edge of the shingles. The fixation points must overlap the next row of roofing;
  • The first row of flexible tiles is laid. It’s better to start from the center of the slope to make it easier to align horizontally. You should retreat 1-2cm from the bottom line of the starting row and glue it using the already proven method. Nail with four nails at a distance of 2-3cm from the groove between the petals;
  • It’s also more convenient to start installing the second row from the middle. But the shingles must be moved so that the tab is above the groove of the first row of shingles and the attachment points are completely covered;
  • The upper corner of the tiles laid next to the pediment is cut in the form of an equilateral triangle with sides of 1.5-2 cm. pruning is needed to remove water.

You can continue laying shingles according to the linear principle, i.e. laying down a whole row, one after another. You can use the pyramidal method with “building up” from the middle of the slope to the edges or diagonally.

Two ways to construct a valley

Two methods have been developed to form a valley:

  • Open gutter device. Row tiles are laid to the valley axis on both adjacent slopes. Only the nails stop driving at a distance of 30cm from the axis. After laying the coated cord, valley lines are marked on the slopes, along which the coating is carefully trimmed. The width of the valley is from 5 to 15 cm. To prevent damage to the soft roof during cutting, a board is placed under the tiles. The corners of the tiles located near the valley are trimmed to remove water, then the back side of the covering elements is coated with mastic and glued.
  • Closed gutter device. The tiles are laid first on the slope with the smallest slope so that approximately 30 cm of material is located on the adjacent slope. The shingles are secured at the top with nails. Afterwards, the second slope is covered, then a line is beaten on it, 3-5 cm away from the axis, along which cutting is carried out. The corners of the tiles are trimmed to remove water, and then the cut loose elements are glued to the mastic.

The nuances of laying tiles on a ridge

Upon completion of the installation of the tiles on the slopes, they begin to arrange the ridge. Ventilation ducts the body of the sheathing must be left open, so a gap of 0.5-2 cm is left between the tops of the slopes. To ensure ventilation, the ridge is equipped with a plastic aerator. It is not very attractive, so for the sake of aesthetics it is decorated with universal ridge-eaves tiles or shingles cut from shingles.

Nail the tiles with 4 nails. Each subsequent element must cover the fasteners of the previous one. The tiles are mounted on the ridges from bottom to top. The ridge is arranged in the direction of the prevailing winds so that the open areas turn to the leeward side.

Soft roof technology: step-by-step instructions on installation

The technology for laying soft roofs has specific features and characteristic design rules, compliance with which will ensure the longevity of the roof.

Construction of houses

Private construction and the use of soft roofing is a fairly relevant topic. This material has a lot of advantages. Among them are low weight, absolute tightness, visual appeal, the possibility of using a wide variety of roof shapes, long useful life and low cost of soft roofing. Moreover, the rain does not drum on such a roof, but rustles quietly. In addition to high performance and technical characteristics, the material allows you to install a soft roof yourself, without involving specialists in the work.

The concept of a soft roof

Soft roofing is a modern material, the base of which is fiberglass sheets impregnated on both sides with rubber bitumen. Rubber bitumen is highly airtight and moisture resistant, which is why soft roofing has become so widespread in the construction of buildings. Also, soft roofing contains a special coating that increases wear resistance and prevents the roll covering from sticking together.

Soft roofing is considered perfect coverage for roofs with a slope of at least 11 degrees. Therefore, when choosing a material for such strict requirements, be careful. Soft roofing is often called bitumen shingles, which are used as the top layer of the roofing cake and differ from other materials in its structure, which resembles rolled materials.

Styling tools

Flexible roofing can be laid by 1 person. The only requirement for the roof surface is that we have already mentioned - the slope is no more than 11º. But the maximum slope angle is not limited. Laying a soft roof with your own hands requires the following materials and tools: a hammer, a knife, mastic, sealant, a mastic trowel, roofing nails, eaves and end strips, waterproofing carpet, ridge-eaves strip and work gloves.

Ventilation device

The ventilation system is able to provide air circulation, which is necessary to prevent condensation from occurring on the lower part of the base. Neglecting this stage when laying soft roofing on the roof will cause the rafter system to begin to rot, and winter time Ice and icicles will form.

The constituent elements of the roof ventilation system are ventilation ducts and outlets, gaps between the waterproofing and the base (minimum 5 millimeters). Natural ventilation can be provided by ventilation holes that are distributed evenly under the eaves.

Lining layer

Cornice strips are made of metal and attached to the overhangs of the cornices on a lining. They are required to protect the edges of the sheathing. Gable strips are also made of metal; they are attached to the ends of the roof to protect the edges of the sheathing. The valley carpet provides additional protection of the roof from precipitation. Choose it according to the color of the flexible tiles.

In places where leaks are most likely, you need to create a lining layer: on valleys, roof ends and eaves. A special feature of the installation is compliance with the direction (bottom to top) and overlap: in the longitudinal direction 150 millimeters, in the transverse direction - 100 millimeters. It is customary to coat the overlap areas with bitumen mastic.

It is customary to reinforce the valleys and ridges by 500 and 250 millimeters, respectively. In this case, the valleys must be equipped with a lining layer on both sides, and along the ends and eaves overhangs it should be laid to a width of at least 400 millimeters.

The lining is nailed to the base with galvanized roofing nails every 200 millimeters. The underlay carpet not only protects the roof from moisture, but also from destruction if the installation of the soft roof is suspended.

Preparatory work

The base to which you will attach the soft roof must be solid. This is precisely why the process of installing a roof made of soft tiles differs from roofs for which other materials are used. For example, metal tiles must be laid on a sheathing in which a gap is allowed between the beams, which is explained by the high rigidity of the metal tiles. A soft roof does not possess these qualities and therefore requires preliminary installation of a solid base.

For arranging the base, you can use oriented strand board, moisture-resistant plywood with a thickness of 9 millimeters or more, as well as tongue and groove or edged boards. If you have chosen a board as the base, it is recommended to first keep it in a stack until an equilibrium moisture level is reached.

Buy material in winter and use in summer. The width of the boards is no more than 100 millimeters. It is desirable that the material has the same thickness and is sawed on a band saw. The maximum moisture content of wood is 20%.

The video about the technology of laying soft roofs shows that such materials need to be laid with the seams shifted - staggered, leaving a gap of 1 centimeter between them. The surface must be dry, clean and smooth. The quality of installation and service life of the soft roof will depend on these conditions.

The roofing pie must necessarily have the following layers: a waterproofing layer laid on the rafters; mineral wool insulation if you are planning to install an attic; waterproofing roofing carpet laid overlapping on the base from the outside.

Subtleties of installing a soft roof

To cover a roof with a soft roof with your own hands, in addition to having free time, you also need good weather. It is customary to carry out work in warm, dry weather, and the air temperature should not fall below plus 5 Celsius. If, due to necessity, it is necessary to lay a soft roof in the winter at an inopportune time, the tiles must be kept in a building with room temperature. You can also use a hot air burner.

Choosing one temperature regime is explained by the characteristics of shingles - a sheet consisting of 3-4 “tiles”. It can be attached to the surface with nails or using a self-adhesive layer located on the inside. The tightness of the tiles is ensured by the warmth of the sun; under its influence, the sheets are soldered to the base and to each other. This does not happen at sub-zero temperatures, and high-quality insulation does not work.

Soft tiles should be used simultaneously from 5-6 packages and selected one element at a time to avoid sharp differences in shades in case it is necessary to repair the soft roof with elements from another package. It is this property that constitutes another advantage of this material: a slight difference in shades facilitates the process of replacing tiles and decorates its matte surface.

Choice of mastic

To lay the top layer of a soft roof, you should use a bitumen-polymer material, which allows you to create a continuous elastic coating that can withstand temperature and mechanical deformations of the base. According to the technology of laying soft roofs, it is recommended to use cold and hot mastics to attach rolled material to the roof.

Cold mastics are traditionally used for the internal layers of the roof, and the hot substance is used as an external coating. Cold mastics include roofing felt and bitumen, and hot mastics include tar and roofing felt. The mastic used must contain bitumen and a pulverized mixture or fiber filler. Among the dusty materials are lime, gypsum and ash.

Production of bitumen mastic

You can buy bitumen mastic, but you can also make it yourself. To do this, take bitumen, which is close to 80% of mastic, and filler. By taking 2 portions of bitumen and diesel fuel per 1 portion of filler, you will get a cold mixture. The bitumen needs to be heated to 180 degrees while diesel fuel and filler are being prepared elsewhere. Both boilers can be mixed only after the water has evaporated in the bitumen.

To make hot mastic you need to use a boiler. The bitumen in it should be heated to 200 degrees, and filler should be added slowly. It is important that during the procedure the temperature does not drop below 160 degrees.

To check the quality of the mastic, you need to lay it at an angle of 45 degrees, after heating the mastic to 60 degrees. The video about laying a soft roof shows: if the coating drains, then its quality is poor. If it does not drain, then you should let it dry. When drying, cracks will not appear in high-quality material.

Laying a soft roof

Before directly laying the roof, run a solution of bitumen and diesel fuel over the wood surface. Then slowly coat with mastic, then lay glassine and roofing felt. It is customary to start installation from the middle part of the cornice and move towards the ends to the right and left. On the underside of soft tiles, before applying, you need to remove the film that protects the glue.

If you use cold mastic, then you need to wait 12 hours after applying a layer, only then can you apply a new layer. When covering with hot mastic, you can apply layers one after another. Each roofing element must be nailed in the amount of 4-6 pieces.

When laying rolls according to the instructions for laying soft roofing, make a 7-10 cm overlap. In all cases, it is recommended to follow the overlap rule: place each top row so that the fastening joints of the previous one are covered. The next new layer is shifted depending on their number (with 2 layers - by half, and with 3 - by a third).

Along the edges of the roof, trim off the excess and glue with mastic. Thanks to the properties of modern soft roofing materials, the useful life of the roof covering is about 30 years. But this does not mean that you can forget about preventive measures.

Installation near ventilation pipes

Proper insulation of joints and careful fastening of material require space around antennas and pipes. Installation of a soft roof here is easy provided that passage elements are used. Without such components, the tightness of the coating is compromised. Even before laying the bitumen shingles, you need to mark out the places where you will install ventilation and pipes.

Then you need to cut holes around which the edges of the lining carpet will be glued with mastic. Spread the top surface of the carpet along the contours of the elements that need to be glued and nailed. Place the tiles on top of the mastic.

It is recommended to treat the joints between the upper part of the passage element and the bitumen shingles with sealant. Having completed the work to the ridge line, you need to use special ridge elements of flexible tiles, which are bent over it, glued to mastic and nailed.

Soft roof repair

Frequency repair work The amount of work that needs to be done with the roof of the house depends directly on the base on which you installed the tiles and on the cost of laying the soft roof. Wood lumber, cement and concrete screed– they all react differently to soft roofing, which causes certain damage.

Cleaning the damaged area

Immediately before starting repairs, determine whether such work is needed at all and to what extent. To do this, assess the extent of damage present. If holes have formed in the rolled covering, it is recommended to fill them with mastic, observing the sequence of materials used for this.

Repair roll roofing should only be done in a clean area. And this is very problematic, because the roofing material contains a special coating. For this reason, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the area where repair work will be carried out.

Crumbs can be removed by using process oil. Anthracene oil is best suited for cleaning roofing felt, while solar oil is used for roofing felt. Clean with a regular rag or brush. With this treatment, you can remove the coating and soften the surface for further repairs.

Repair work

After preparing the damaged area, you can proceed to the main work. For small defects, you can use regular mastic with a patch. But this solution is not suitable if all roofing layers are broken.

If several layers of the roof are damaged at the same time, it is recommended to clean the area from the old layer of mastic and dirt, and then dry it. After this, you need to prepare a mastic mixture with the addition of sawdust or sand. This mixture should be used to fill all existing damage so as to even out the edges. The mastic should extend at least 10 centimeters on all sides of the patch.

Using hard brushes and brushes, mastic can be applied in the most hard to reach places. If you are working on a small area, then it is advisable to use a simple spatula, which allows you to apply thick mastic and sawdust mixture. If a “water bubble” occurs in the roof, repairs must be carried out in the same way as in a situation with a regular hole. The main thing is to determine in time the source where the water comes from.

If cracks appear in the roofing material, it should be cut to the bottom layer. Then clean off excess mastic and debris, after which the area is dried and filled with new mastic. You can do without a cut if the cracks are small. They should be covered with a patch and mastic. If small cracks appear throughout the entire area of the soft roof, it must be prepared and covered with heated mastic.

Restoration of sprinkles

After repairing the soft roof, it is necessary to replace the removed layer of topping in place to avoid unnecessary heating of the material and melting of the mastic. To do this, smooth the surface and cover the roof with sand. Excess coating that does not adhere to the roof will be removed on its own over time. However, if you want, you can remove it yourself.

Now you have learned what advantages a soft roof has - tightness, long term use and reasonable price for laying a soft roof. Follow our instructions carefully to install flexible tiles correctly. Use the recommendations regarding the choice of mastic and its preparation. And if minor problems arise during the operation of the roof, re-read the information about repairing soft roofs.

Laying a soft roof with your own hands, Construction portal

Construction of houses Private construction and the use of soft roofing is a fairly relevant topic. This material has a lot of advantages. Among them are light weight, absolute

Do-it-yourself soft roofing can be done without much difficulty. To do this, you should use materials that are designed for laying on a solid base.

Installation of a soft roof using flexible tiles

The use of bituminous shingles can only be done when the roof has a flat type of the smallest slope relative to the horizontal, it should be 12 degrees or more. If this parameter is lower, then moisture will stagnate at the joints, which will cause damage to the coating.

External conditions

Do-it-yourself soft roofing using bitumen shingles can be installed at 5 degrees or higher. This is due to the characteristics of the sheet, which contains several elements. It can be attached to the surface using nails or using a self-adhesive layer. The latter is located on the inside. Absolute impermeability of the material becomes possible under the influence of solar heat. Under its influence, the sheets are mated with each other and the surface. At sub-zero temperatures, this effect cannot be achieved, so the insulation will not be of high quality.

When installing a soft roof with your own hands, a photo of which can be seen in the article, a positive temperature is also necessary because the fragility of the sheets in cold weather will not allow installing the material with overlap, and this is necessary, especially on the ridge.

Preparing the base

If you are installing a soft roof with your own hands, then you can use an edged board as the basis for flexible tiles. It can be moisture-resistant plywood, OSB or other construction material which has a smooth surface. The permissible base humidity can be 20 percent. At the joints, the boards must be fixed to the supports and at least two purlins must be overlapped between them.

As for the seams of the lower skin, they must have gaps, the width of which is 2 millimeters. If the sheathing is made of edged boards, then the grooves should be slightly larger, their parameters vary within 5 millimeters. When installing edged boards, you must ensure that the annual rings are positioned upward with the rounded parts.

Ventilation features

If you install a soft roof with your own hands, with step by step photos can be found in the article. The presence of ventilation guarantees air circulation, which is necessary to prevent the formation of condensation that may occur on the lower part of the base. If we neglect this stage of the process, this will cause the rafter system to be susceptible to rotting, whereas in winter time Ice and icicles will form on it.

When carrying out work, it is important to take into account that the roof ventilation system consists of several elements, among which we can highlight ventilation outlets and air gap. The latter is located between the waterproofing and the base. Its thickness should be 5 millimeters. In addition to the above-mentioned components, the ventilation system has elements that are located in the curtain rod scales.

Before laying a soft roof with your own hands, you need to work on the ventilation system. If you want it to work correctly and the attic space to be ventilated naturally, then the holes must be located under the eaves overhang evenly along the entire ridge.

Lining layer

Laying a soft roof with your own hands requires the presence of a lining layer. It should be located on the eaves overhangs, valleys and ends of the roof from top to bottom. Provided that the roof slope exceeds 18 degrees, it is permissible to limit the lining only where leakage is most likely. Skates and valleys need to be strengthened by 250 and 500 millimeters, respectively. The latter must be equipped with a lining layer on both sides; along the eaves, as well as end overhangs, it must be laid in a width of 400 millimeters or more.

If the roof has a slope ranging from 12 to 18 degrees, then the lining should be laid over the entire area, it should be directed from the bottom to the top. In the longitudinal direction, the overlap width should be 150 millimeters; as for the transverse direction, this figure should be 100 millimeters or more. The lining is secured to the base using galvanized roofing nails; the distance between them must be 200 millimeters. In order to achieve better sealing of overlap areas, it is necessary to treat these areas with bitumen mastic.

Working on cornice and gable trims

If you are installing a soft roof, do-it-yourself installation technology will help you with this (it is presented in the article). At the stage of installation of the cornice strips, it is necessary to install the elements on the lining on the overhangs of the cornice. These components are made of metal; they are necessary to reliably protect the edges of the sheathing. Fixation is carried out with mounting nails. It is important to ensure the correct distance between them, it should be 100 millimeters.

Where the cornice strips will interface with each other, it is necessary to make an overlap of 20 millimeters or more. Gable crossbars are also made of steel; they must be installed on the lining material at the ends of the roof. They are designed to protect the edge of the sheathing. The installation technology is similar to that used when installing curtain rods.

If you are installing a soft garage roof with your own hands, then you should not forget about the valley carpet; it acts as protection for the entire system from the effects of precipitation. You need to choose it according to the shade of the tiles; fixation is done with roofing nails. The overlaps must be well taped.

Laying tiles

When laying a soft roof with your own hands, you should remember that before working on the lower surface of the tiles, you need to get rid of the protective film. The craftsman should be aware that the eaves tiles should be located 2 centimeters from the edge of the eaves throughout the entire overhang. The main part of the material should start from the middle. As for standard conditions, the canvas should be fixed with four nails, but if the roof slope is extremely steep or the building area is dominated by permanent strong winds, you need to use about 6 nails.

The first row is installed so that the edge is removed from the top edge of the cornice material by 1 cm and no more. Petals should be used to decorate joints. When installing the next row, it is necessary to ensure that the level of the cutouts of the previous row and the ends of the so-called petals necessarily coincide.

If you are thinking about how to make a soft roof with your own hands, then during the work process the material will need to be cut along the edge and glued to a width that is 10 cm or more. Before starting installation, the slopes must be marked with chalk, drawing horizontal lines. This is necessary to ensure that the sheets are accurately positioned in the row. If the slope has a broken geometry or additional elements in the form of dormer windows are installed on it, then chalk markings will help to align the rows.

Installation of ridge tiles

If you are installing a soft roof with your own hands, the instructions for carrying out the work will help you. You can get acquainted with it by reading this article. In order to obtain ridge tiles, it is necessary to work on the eaves; it is cut into three parts in the perforation area. It must be mounted on the ridge, parallel, turning the elements with the short side towards it. These parts must be secured with four nails, two of which must be located on one side.

Euroroofing felt laying technology

Before laying a soft roof with your own hands, you need to select a material. This can be euroroofing felt, which is a rolled weld-on material. It also applies to soft roofing. These sheets differ from bitumen shingles in that they can be installed on a flat roof.

Preparing the base

The roof surface must not only be hard, but also dry, it must be completely cleaned of dust and dirt. Among other things, the base must meet all requirements fire safety. Any monolithic coating can be used for work. This includes concrete plates, which can act as a base only if they are equipped with a slope for water drainage. In addition, such a surface must have a cement-sand screed. You can fuse roofing felt onto a pressed OSB board.

If the work is to be carried out on old roof, which has an existing resin cake, then it will act as a good basis. The surface must be treated with bitumen-polymer mastic. It can be used as a concentrate or in a ready-made state. Mastic is not required when laying the described material on an old coating. Before carrying out work, you must carefully study the instructions for using the mastic; the packaging should indicate the amount of time required for final drying. It is not recommended to fuse roofing felt before this period. This is due to the fact that these manipulations will negatively affect the quality of the roof.

Laying work must begin from the point where the drainage line is located, that is, from the bottom. Because the drain line is parallel to the slope line, water will not flow into the joints of the strips.

Installation of euroroofing felt

If you are installing a soft roof, do-it-yourself installation technology will help you with this. If you decide to use euroroofing felt, you should remember that this material cannot be overheated. If this does happen, you will have to purchase a new one, since overheating causes damage, and the roofing material loses its ability to adhere. The finished surface should not have places that lack protective coating. You should not carry out work on a surface that has voids and black spots; a high-quality coating should be uniform.

Reading time ≈ 4 minutes

The use of flexible tiles allows you to give any building a stylish and modern look. You can carry out the work on your own: there will be no difficulties when laying insulating layers or roofing material. The complexity and duration of the work depends only on the shape of the roof, its size and design.

Diagram of a soft roof structure

Where does the installation of flexible tiles begin?

To lay bitumen shingles with your own hands, you will need to create a solid foundation - a rafter structure. It is made of timber with dimensions of 150×50 mm. The distance between adjacent rafters is about 60 cm. The arrangement of the elements determines the future roof structure. But regardless of the size or angle of the slope, the installation of a soft roof will be carried out without any problems. After constructing the rafter system or before assembling the structure, it is recommended to treat the lumber with an antiseptic.

The next stage is vapor barrier of the roof. The layer is installed from the attic (attic) side. Fastening the rolled material starts from the ridge, parallel to the cornice.

The layer is attached to the rafter structure with a construction stapler. Each new layer is superimposed on the previous one with an overlap of about 10-15 cm. The joints are secured with foil adhesive tape.

Insulation of soft roofs

Laying of mineral wool insulation is carried out from the outside. The first layer of insulation sheets will be located between the rafters (perpendicular to the eaves). Before laying them, you will need to perform rough sheathing on the attic side. The optimal thickness of the insulation layer for the central region of Russia is about 15-20 cm (2 sheets of insulation).

This two-level installation of insulation almost completely eliminates cold bridges.

A layer of vapor diffusion membrane is fixed on top of the insulation. Such a “multi-layer” installation of a soft roof with your own hands will prevent dust from getting on the mineral wool and prevent the accumulation of precipitation on the insulation.

The material is laid parallel to the cornice with an overlap of layers of 10-15 cm. Additionally, about 15-20 cm of the membrane should extend beyond the insulation contour at the bottom. The material is fastened with a construction stapler, the joints are connected with self-adhesive tape.

Preparation of the ventilation chamber and installation of flexible tiles

The ventilation layer between the base of the roof and the insulation must be at least 5 cm. This is enough to normalize the temperature and remove wet steam. The second layer of counter beam is installed parallel to the rafters.

For work, lumber with parameters of 5x5 cm is used, the distance between adjacent supports is 30 cm. Fastening is done with gaps of 5-10 cm, as shown in the attached photos. Next, the work on arranging and installing a roof made of soft tiles is carried out according to the following step-by-step instructions:

1. A moisture-resistant OSB board is fixed on top of the counterbeam (with a gap between the sheets of 3-4 mm, excluding differences in height of 2 mm).

3. Installation in progress waterproofing material(transverse overlap - 20 cm; longitudinal - 10 cm) with seams sealed with bitumen mastic.

4. The roof is marked, the soft roof is laid and fixed with rough galvanized nails.

The process of installing a soft roof is relatively simple; it is quite possible to do it yourself, without the help of specialists.

Soft roofing is a good alternative to traditional roofing materials.

Its advantages over them: flexibility, ease of processing and low price.

You will learn about where to start installing a roof, as well as the advantages of this type of roofing and the surface requirements for it, in this article.

What is a soft roof?

Sometimes it is also called flexible or bitumen shingles. This is due to the fact that it is made from bitumen.

But don’t be scared and turn away from this roofing material - it’s not roofing felt, but a modern and popular (in some countries) material.

Soft roofing is much stronger and more durable than ordinary roofing felt. Everyone knows that bitumen is a very unstable material: it breaks, melts and collapses.

However, thanks to modern developments, it has been possible to increase its resistance to negative influences.

TechnoNIKOL, a manufacturer of soft roofing shinglas (Shinglas), guarantee from 10 to 55 years of impeccable service.

Modern soft roofing based on bitumen is not prone to tearing, and high or low ambient temperatures do not cause its destruction.

Thanks to the introduction of modifiers (various rubbers), it was possible to add bending strength and resistance to negative temperatures.

Thanks to the technology of treating melted bitumen with oxygen, we achieved an increase in the melting temperature to 90-110 degrees Celsius.

Now, even in the strongest sunshine, the roof will not melt.

In addition, resistant and durable fiberglass is used as a reinforcing layer in the production of soft roofing. This allows you to increase its strength.

Stone topping, usually basalt chips, is used as the top protective layer. It performs not only protective, but also decorative functions, for this purpose dyes are added to it.

Summarizing all of the above, we have a conclusion: modern soft roofing is a durable and beautiful material that is easy and simple to work with. Of course, if you know how. There are instructions for this that will help you figure out how to work with this material.

You can familiarize yourself with the operating rules in the video available here.

It is worth remembering that laying soft roofing on roofs with a slope of less than 11° is highly not recommended. Since there is no guarantee that with such a bias it will perform its functions.

At such small slopes it is worth using weld-on materials.

Let's start installation

Since flexible roofing is quite easy to work with, self-installation quite simple, which cannot be said about other types of roofing.

However, if you decide to carry out the work yourself, you need to know how it is done.

After watching the video, you will notice that the technology for laying soft roofing is different, different from traditional ones, which use sheet roofing materials.

Therefore, let's consider this point in more detail. And from the very beginning - from preparing the foundation.

To work, you will need a minimum set of tools: a hammer, a knife, a spatula, a tape measure and a cord for marking.

Consumables: galvanized roofing nails, with a wide head, and mastic, for gluing roofing elements. TechnoNIKOL mastic.

Preparing the base

The construction of a soft roof does not have its own rigidity, unlike, for example, a metal profile or slate. Therefore, the roof surface must be continuous and durable.

An excellent solution to this issue would be to use moisture-resistant plywood or OSB. The thickness of the sheets is selected based on the distance between the rafters.

The step of the sheathing device also depends on the distance of the rafters; the larger it is, the more often the sheathing is filled. Sheets of plywood or oriented strand board are fastened with self-tapping screws.

Be sure to roll the edges so that they do not curl over time.

It is worth noting that the use of plywood or OSB, as mentioned earlier, is an excellent option, but far from the only one.

You can cover the roof with a solid edged or tongue-and-groove board, 30 mm thick. Naturally, this option takes longer and, in the case of using tongue-and-groove boards, is more expensive.

But if you have the desire and opportunity, why not do it.

Please note that all of the above applies to a simple roof, but if an attic is made, then the whole range of work is carried out: insulation, hydro- and vapor barrier, and only then, having filled the counter-lattice, a continuous surface is installed for a soft roof.

A ventilation gap is also required to remove the resulting moisture. Therefore, a gap is left in the cornice and slots are made in the ridge for aerators.

It is worth paying attention to the ventilation pipes. If the pipe is wider than 50 centimeters, then it is better to make a slope behind it.

This solution will prevent sediment from accumulating behind the pipe and it will be discharged without hindrance. You can see what it looks like in the video.

Lining

For example, consider the installation of a soft shingles roof.

After preparing the base, they begin to work with the underlay, it is also called the underlay carpet.

This is a rolled material, which is an essential part of a soft roof and provides additional protection from moisture, and also makes it easier to work with roofing elements.

The substrate is secured with roofing nails and at the joints with TechnoNIKOL mastic.

Roofs with a slope of less than 18 degrees are completely covered with a substrate. Roofs with a slope of 18 to 90 degrees are allowed to be partially covered.

When partially applying the substrate, only the following are covered: cornice, gable edge, valley, hip, ridge, exit points dormer windows and ventilation pipes.

For clarity, it is worth watching the video.

Continuous arrangement of lining carpet. The rolls are rolled out horizontally. They start at the bottom and work their way up. Horizontal overlap - no less than 15 cm, vertical overlap - no less than 10 cm.

The joint is additionally glued using TechnoNIKOL mastic or any other mastic.

Partial installation of underlay carpet.

The roof is covered with lining around the perimeter and in difficult places - ridge, valley, and so on.

Use the entire width of the lining material.

The lining is glued to the base and pierced along the edge with nails. The distance between the nails is no more than 20 cm. If the material is joined, then the overlap is at least 10-15 cm.

Complex elements, such as the valley, hip, junctions of ventilation pipes and dormer windows, are carefully glued with the full width of the lining roll.

For better adhesion, TechnoNIKOL mastic is used. Slots are made in the ridge lining for aerators.

After installing the carpet, install cornice and gable strips. They start with the cornices. They are attached directly to the lining and secured with roofing nails.

Then the pediment strips are attached in the same way. The nails are struck at a distance of 15 cm.

Laying tiles

It is removed before installation.

Laying a soft roof (including with your own hands) begins with the eaves and ridge. Universal ridge-eaves tiles are fixed along the entire length.

The edges of this roofing element are glued with TechnoNIKOL mastic and nailed with roofing nails. The nails are struck at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other.

Then guide lines are beaten off with a coated cord for reference. Shingles are laid over them.

Shingles color may vary slightly.

To prevent one part of the roof slope from being a different color from the other, you need to open all the packages before starting work and use elements from them one by one.

So the difference in color, if there is one, will not be noticeable.

After all, shingles from different packages will be mixed.

Installation of the first row of elements begins from the middle and alternately moves in both directions. Each shingle, especially the outer ones, is well glued with TechnoNIKOL mastic.

Roofing nails with wide heads are driven in specially designated places. They are different for each type of tile.

Therefore, the instructions for the purchased roof must be read. Having reached the ridge, do not forget to leave slots for aerators.

When laying along the edges of the roof, you need to adjust the size of the tiles. This is done simply. The elements are cut to size with a sharp knife.

In the same way, soft tiles are cut when lining dormers and ventilation pipes, valleys and hips.

To cut shingles, use a small sheet of plywood, which is placed under the element to be cut. This is necessary to avoid damaging the already laid shingles.

Final stage

This includes installing a ridge and aerators. The latter are used for ventilation devices. Air moves upward from the eaves, so aerators are installed as high as possible.

The best thing is in the skate itself. The method of attaching aerators is the same as for tiles. Aerators are secured using nails. After installation, they are covered on top with ridge tiles.
